Re: Realization and realized masters

I don’t think that is the understanding in the Zen tradition. (This is a Zen forum.) Can you provide references? I received these teachings in the grounds and paths material, I believe it's from Asanga in the abhidharma-samuccaya. Malcolm will know far more than me here though. It's also in the dha...

Yes fortunately I managed to receive the initiation. I didn't hear any specific commitments, did you?

Hi Shaun,

Do you know if the empowerment is being broadcast? It just seems to be the tsog offering live now.

Re: Realization and realized masters

It is accepted Buddhist doctrine across all traditions that there are Pratyeka Buddhas; so a teacher, realized or not, may be beneficial, but is not necessary. Pratyeka Buddhas only appear in a period without dharma though, so while Sakyamuni's dharma is existent we cannot have Pratyeka Buddhas. An...

Re: HE Jhado Rinpoche teachings in CA

I'm not Shaun but I hope you don't mind me throwing my two cents in here. Since His Holiness the Dalai Lama explicitly mentioned during the conferral of some (not all) wangchen and jenang that people could receive that particular transmission by livestream, I think more Gelug lamas have been okay w...

Re: Taking Refuge formally

Lobsang Chojor: good advice, and thank you to you too. I am probably a way off the Basic Programme; might have to opt for 'Discovering Buddhism' first, as I don't think I'd be able to balance work, my degree and an online programme if I had knowingly aimed above where I should start. Does that make...

Re: HE Jhado Rinpoche teachings in CA

If given as a daily commitment, the tsog can be optional I think. I say this to encourage anyone who is a committed practitioner relying on lamas of the Gelug lineage and presented with an opportunity to receive commentary on Guru Puja to do so. I myself have had great fortune to receive extensive ...

Re: Taking Refuge formally

That's a good plan. I was looking at a retreat in April at Land of Joy, so hopefully that will all work out nicely. I thought that might be more appropriate than rushing ahead into any of the online study programmes (besides I have work and my University degree to juggle). Ven Mary is a good teache...

Re: Taking Refuge formally

Refuge is more important to be an internal generation of intent rather than an external ceremony. As Malcolm says the Three Heaps Sutra and the subsequent prostration practice are good. It's nice to have a community near you it helps your practice, especially as a beginner, so you could go to Samye ...

Re: HE Jhado Rinpoche teachings in CA

Okay, LMB got back to me and the Lama Chopa is only going to be given in person and there will be limited admission. Shaun Thank you, I emailed but didn't get a clear answer. That's a shame but understandable at the New York ones Rinpoche said you can't control who attends online so it's not possib...

Re: HE Jhado Rinpoche teachings in CA

I don't think they have opened registration for that yet. Yes, it seems that these teachings will be on Lama Chopa from the tantric context and daily recitation will be the commitment. Lama Chopa with Tsog at a brisk pace takes about 50-60 min. Without Tsog (and I am assuming this means without Son...

Sean do you know how to register for the Lama Chöpa teachings?

I assume the commitment for Lama Chöpa takes about half an hour to complete?

Re: Is impermanence the same or different than emptiness?

I am talking about intrinsic existence. We're talking past each other then. There is no such thing as permanent phenomena. Any equivalence is because both are illusions. You keep insisting on this but Prasangika divide phenomena into permanent and impermanent. True cessation is another permanent ph...

Re: Is impermanence the same or different than emptiness?

No, the lack of an elephant in your room doesn’t “exist”. There is no true ‘existence’ of a lack of a phenomenon. An elephant (or lack of) in your imagination may occur as an object of your awareness, but it is without self-causation or intrinsic reality, which is really what defines the term, “exi...

Re: Is impermanence the same or different than emptiness?

Of course, since all phenomena lack inherent existence, all phenomena are therefore impermanent. So, phenomena share both characteristics. So the absence of the elephant in my room is impermanent? It exists or otherwise there would be an elephant in my room and it's a mental image (which are perman...

There is a Geshe Sonam Ngodrup at Lama Yeshe Ling (FPMT) (and I believe his interpreter Ven. Khedrup used to post on here quite frequently)--Toronto area. During lockdown I've been fortunate enough to be able to receive some teachings from Geshe Sonam Ngondrup through zoom/Facebook and I can't reco...

Re: Core Scriptures For Each School

For gelug my understanding was that yamantaka tends to be first with the other cycles building on top of yamantaka. The gurus tend to say Yamantaka is very powerful in the modern times as it works with anger which is very common now, and the Solitary Hero form is less complicated than other practic...

I don't know if Rinpoche will give it but Lama Chöpa commentaries often come with a commitment to practice Lama Chöpa daily. Just an FYI if you already have a lot of commitments
