Re: Crisis of a Faith, returning to dharma, and new directions.
Everybody who preaches compassion is forgiveness or whatever isn’t automatically a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva vows to liberate beings from samsara. That’s very specific. Hopefully, altruistic and virtuous attributes would be the norm. That’s the whole point of spreading that message, so that others...

Re: new translations by Kokyo Henkel
Kokyo Henkel is an ordained Zen priest in the Shunryu Suzuki Roshi lineage of Soto Zen. He received Dharma Transmission from Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi. He’s also been practicing with Dzogchen teacher Tsokyni Rinpoche. He recently posted links to a few translations of previously untranslated writin...

According to Lama Zopa Rinpoche https://www.lamayeshe.com/advice/recite-amitabha’s-name-every-day If you recite Amitabha's name every day, when you die you will go to the blissful realm of Amitabha like a rocket, without any obstacle. PRAYER: I prostrate to the Tathagata Infinite Light Buddha. I pr...

Re: What is the motivation for Tibetan Buddhists to join the monastics?
Not sure how it is today in India and Nepal, but at monasteries in old Tibet you needed to pay for your own food. So, monks either came from a wealthy family who could foot their food bill or had some other sponsor.

Re: What is the motivation for Tibetan Buddhists to join the monastics?
If the Mahasiddhas were not all monastics, and if Vajrayana is not a path of renunciation, and if great accomplishment in the path is open to lay Buddhists, then what is the motivation of young Tibetans to join the monkhood? if you look at the Indian commentaries of the Chakrasamvara tantra preserv...

Re: What is the motivation for Tibetan Buddhists to join the monastics?
So we're back to it being not a path of renunciation, which is what I've always thought. That's simply wrong due to an incomplete and superficial view. Maybe you bother to read the explanation by a Nyingma Rinpoche: https://samyeinstitute.org/paths/vajrayana/renunciation-wake-up-call/ Renunciation ...

Re: Living Dzogchen Masters?
Karma Lhundup is taking initiations himself. Indeed - but how many genuine lamas consider themselves to be beyond the stage of taking teachings, empowerments and blessings? Not many, afaik. (I'm not sure if that was your implication.) I admire lamas who make an effort to continue receiving teaching...

Re: Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö’s Prophecy of Things to Come?
The Gregorian dates in the version you have posted are speculative. They appear to be bang on. Like any prophecy, you can't say until the time comes (unless you have supernatural insight into the future time) if the prophecy came true or not, so it will remain to be seen what occurs on those dates....

Re: Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö’s Prophecy of Things to Come?
The following is all self-explanatory and as stated, it explicity stressed that this prophecy must be shared as widely as possible to all sentient beings at this time to avert the disasters predicted. The Light That Makes Things Clear: A Prophecy of Things to Come⁶ “The singular work entitled The ...

Re: restricted texts
Ideally, traditionally, these instructions would be granted to an individual or in a very small group of disciples who were personally well known to the teacher. In this way, the teacher could be sure that the student was ready to receive and seriously practice them. Is this actually true? For exam...

Strange point to bring up when it says Tibetan Buddhist in the title of the topic which is also in the Tibetan Buddhism forum. Yeah, it's really odd that the person does only bother about Tibetan explicitly, and does not seem to bother about any other language spoken, read or written by Vajra...

Gautama Buddha could not read Tibetan at all. Same is true for the majority of Buddhist masters of past and present. Re: Western-Born (English) Tibetan Buddhist Teachers Like Alan Wallace
OP, you need to clarify what you mean. There are a handful of qualified, Western-born lamas who can read Tibetan. Actually, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a qualified lama who cannot read Tibetan at all. However, I don't think there is anyone else who really teaches like Alan Wallace. Some...

Re: Some Observation on the Guru-Chela Relationship by Tulku Sherdor
That's nice it doesn't apply to sociopaths, but this black and white thinking is problematic. Many abusive gurus do not appear outwardly to be abusive, or sociopaths. Some of them appear to have some degree of institutional authenticity and widely recognized for their realization (i.e. Trungpa, Sog...
