Verses from the Avatamsaka Sutra at end of Kwanseum Bosal chanting (and Jijang Bosal, and Amita Bul, and Sogamuni Bul)

Post by curtstein »

Below are the verses chanted at the end of these four Yeom Bul chants: Kwanseum Bosal, Jijang Bosal, Namu Amita Bul, and Sogamuni Bul (as taught by Zen Master Seung Sahn - but not unique to him by any means).

Each verse has the Hanja, Hangul, Romaja, and a fairly literal English translation.

剎塵心念可數知
찰진심념가수지
chal jin shim yeom ga su ji
land dust thought able count know

大海中水可飮盡
대해중수가음진
dae hae jung su ga eum jin
great ocean center water able drink use-up

虛空可量風可繫
허공가량풍가계
heo gong ga ryang pung ga gye
sky able measure wind able bind

無能盡說佛功德
무능진설불공덕
mu neung jin seol bul gong deog
powerless explain buddha's virtue-merit

This is from the very end of the Avatamsaka Sutra (but before the "Conclusion: The Conduct and Vows of Samantabhadra", at least in Dharmamitra's translation).

Here are three translations (the first and third are available online, the second is in Dharmamitra's translation):

From the Chogye Order, in their English language translation of the Bulja Pillam in the section on "Mantras to be recited in the morning":
(http://www.koreanbuddhism.net/bbs/board ... 0&wr_id=43)
The dust of all the lands can be reckoned by the mind;
The water of the great oceans can be entirely swallowed;
Emptiness can be measured and the winds can be tied up;
But it is impossible to completely proclaim the virtues and merits of
the Buddha.
From Bhikshu Dharmamitra:
(http://www.kalavinka.org/kp_book_pages/ ... k_page.htm)
Perhaps one could count all the ksetras' dusts and all the minds' thoughts
or drink up all the waters of the great ocean.
And perhaps one could measure empty space and tie up all the winds.
Still no one can fully describe the Buddha's meritorious qualities.
Alex Lo:
(http://www.drbachinese.org/vbs/publish/ ... 92p021.htm)
You might count every thought, numerous as atoms in all lands,
You might drink entirely the mighty oceans deep,
You might measure all of space, or harness fast the wind,
But no one could ever finish praising the virtues of the Buddha.
