Our of curiosity, does anyone know if there is any history of S.o.V lung-ta, pre D.C?
I would have thought the 6 syllables would have been a more obvious choice given what is written about them.

Yes, the Song of the Vajra can function as a tag-drol. It is included in Jigmelingpa's famous, widely disseminated tag-drol. Definitely pre-DC. However, it was Chogyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche Who had a dream and added the current melody and popularized it's practice.
