Early Buddhism of the Āgamas and Nikāyas; 2. The Abhidharma or Nikāya period; 3. The early Mahāyānaperiod of the Prajñāpāramitā literature; and 4. The Madhyamaka philosophy of Nāgārjuna, including the MahāprajñāpāramitāUpadeśa, which is traditionally attributed to him. As such, it is one of the most complete modern studies on the theme of emptiness. Structurally, it does follow the broad historical categories of the discourse, but avoids the anachronistic use of material, and draws on numerous lines of textual tradition. For early Buddhism, yìnShùn uses both classic Chinese translations and modern Chinese translations of the Pāli canon, and for the mainstream period, has mastery over the entire range of sectarian literature well preserved in Chinese, in addition to modern translations of Pāli Abhidhamma and paracanonical material
