Situation in Group E right now is incredible, in terms of how it started, where it went, and how it is right now. Many matches in the world cup have shown just why it's the most popular sporting event on the planet. The Japanese have gotten out of their beds extra early today, and are watching the match which started 04:00 AM JST, against Spain. And as it stands now, Japan is in the lead, 2-1. While Costa Rica equalized against Germany, 1-1. It doesn't matter how tired they will get later today, they will be levitating as a consequence of this result.

Edit: 2-1 Costa Rica now... :rolleye:

Edit again: Germany equalized. 2-2.

Japan beats Spain 2-1, Germany leads 4-2 over Costa Rica, but Japan wins group, and Germany is out!

The final 30 minutes or so show how dangerous any German team is. They never give up. If on the other hand the Germans had let Costa Rica score and win with one goal difference they could have assured Spain's exit as well. But they kept fighting against impossible odds while Spain had given up on beating Japan in the end phase.

To steal a quote from the show Malcolm linked to earlier in this thread: "Dr. Sharon helped me remember that even though football is life, football is also death. And that football is football too. But mostly that football is life!"

It would have been extremely funny if Japan and Costa Rica had gone through and Spain and Germany bombed out, but alas. Still. Belgium! Germany! Uruguay (though at least Suarez won't bite anyone this year)! Mexico!

Its highly likely we will have a Brazil vs Argentina semi final!!!

On the other side, I'm hoping for a France vs Portugal semi final but why do I have the feeling that morocco vs Senegal semi final might happen instead!!

If you want your favourite team to reach the (semi)final(s), be glad Germany was eliminated today.

Up until some of the last minutes of those last two matches, it was looking like that would happen (when Costa Rica had the lead).

Someone on Twitter showed this close-up of just how lucky Japan was with their 2-1 goal:

And this one is nice:

The goal, if I remember correctly, was first allowed, then immediately disallowed, but then it went to VAR, and after what appeared to be 3 minutes or so of deliberation, it was finally allowed. The ball may look like it's out, but from a bird's eye point of view - the only one that matters - the ball still touched the line, so it was in play.

Germany ended up winning their match by 2 goals but still eliminated due to Japan's win. So if I'm not mistaken, Japan got into the knockout round by winning that match against Spain, i.e., they got in by one millimeter.

:woohoo:

I've been waiting for this for forty years, ever since Germany and Austria's infamous stitch-up of Algeria in 1982. Poetic justice at its best.

This Germany is not the same Germany I grew up with. They deserve to be outed by Japan ever since they lost the head to head match.

Hope they will be back in form by Euro 2024
