The great kindness of ChNN

Post by oldbob »

:namaste:

Key Question for the Dzogchen students of ChNN.

I have posted some/all of this before in other threads but the discussion was always interrupted so now I'm trying again. I hope that those responsible on DW will allow this thread to be easy to find without much searching. I don’t see how this is possible without somehow pinning this post.

I have recently distributed a provisional list of the Secondary Practices of ChNN that are currently in the Digital Archive as preserved by Merigar.

https://www.dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?t=40299

Note – Merigar - not/not by the IDC or the International Ati-yoga Foundation is currently claiming the right to determine who has access to all the Secondary Practices as contained in the Digital Archive.

It should be possible for all the Gars and Lings to request their own copy of the Digital Archive. ChNN had spoken of this many times.

It is hoped that by sharing the Digital Archive will allow and encourage the preservation and teaching of all of the Secondary Practices of ChNN - so that a living Transmission Lineage can be created and preserved for all time.

If enough lineage holder practitioners collaborate - we can achieve this in our life time.

Sadly, here is the state of the Dzogchen Community in June 2022.

Here is what one major center is presenting.

For the month of June, 2022, the calendar of Tseygyalgar East, the seat of the International Dzogchen Community in the USA, listed the following ongoing practices:

Note: Tseygyalgar East – given as an example of a worldwide issue.

Note: all of the variations of Yantra Yoga and Breathing are listed as one category (as they formerly were), all the variations of Vajra Dance, listed as one category, and all the variations of Ghana Puja listed as one category here are the “Secondary Practices.”

Yantra Yoga
Vajra Dance
Ganapuja
Odzer Chenma
Mandarava
Practice of the Precious Vase
Jñanadakini Thugtig
Practice of the Natural Light

Of the 67 teaching events in the Month of June, 26 or so are concerned with Yantra Yoga / Breathing, Vajra Dance had 5 events.

For the once-a-year major retreat, The Draft Retreat Schedule adds Tara, Chod, Fire Puja and ”Meditation” practices:

Note: Perhaps the meditation that will taught will be shamatha – vipassanaa style and not the easy, concentration on an object – relax the field, Dzogchen style, as taught by ChNN.

For the upcoming July "Summer Retreat" here is what will be taught.

https://www.tsegyalgar.org/Data/components/media library/Summer-Sang ha-Retreat-Daily-schedule.pdf

Note: the retreat that they have chosen for replay, “2015”, is not ideal. ChNN was not at his best. This retreat was discouraging and sad for all who had attended other retreats with ChNN.

The key question to be asked is, “are the Members of the Dzogchen Community content to preserve ONLY a dozen or so of the 100+ Secondary Practices?”

While preserving these dozen of the Secondary Practices may be ideal for some, perhaps it is not ideal for all. Maybe, through collaboration, we can do better.

Maybe there are new practitioners who would like to learn a new Secondary Practice or old practitioners who would like to refresh their practice by seeing ChNN teach that practice again.

Right now, Merigar has published a finding that requests for media from the Digital Archive may be submitted by Gars and Lings (the Dharma centers of the International Dzogchen Community.)

So, it appears that - as of now - individuals can go to their center, (Gar or Ling) and request that their center make a request from the Digital Archive of a certain retreat or teaching.

Whether Merigar will honor these requests in the future - is still a big question. For a while they were saying that if you had attended a retreat, or had permission from ChNN, you could request and have a copy of the material from that retreat. If you had permission from ChNN you could also request a copy of a retreat.

If someone receives permission from ChNN in a dream or vision from ChNN to study and practice a certain teaching – how can anyone challenge that.

So if you imagine ChNN giving you permission - then the entire Digital Archive of 650+ retreats - is open to you.

This is the great kindness of ChNN.

I think it entirely possible that this schedule could have run prior to Rinpoche's passing. There is a practical consideration that you can only hold so many practices during a week, and both VD & YY have always been core to activities across all Gars and Lings, based on Rinpoche's guidance.

If you hold the necessary transmission there is no obstacle to you personally studying and doing any secondary practice. And you are also entitled to request the audio files for any retreat which you may have attended.

So I don't really see that Merigar and or the IDC are holding things back on an exlusionary basis.

Yes,

There is the issue of what is considered as the necessary transmission.

CHNNR always said that people who ask directly him for permission and receive that permission can have access to the recordings. Perhaps it is allowable to have people request permission from a vision of Rinpoche, receive that permission, and then communicate that permission to the authorities at Merigar to allow that recording to be released.

This solves the permission issue.

Perhaps this is more kindly than having people lie about attending a certain retreat. Also the list of retreats and contents needs to be released by Merigar so that interested practitioners know what to ask for.

A list of living lineage holders could be organized on Sangha.

It is clearly not ideal for ONLY those few with access to the servers at Merigar to be the only ones to have access to the 100+ Seconary Practices given in the 650+ retreats.

This creates a hierarchy of power trip access to the Teachings. This was never the intention of ChNN.

Putting a copy of the digital archive at each Gar would help, but putting the archive on line with open access for all members who have received permission from ChNN in a vision is most fair.

I am sure that the open hearted kindness of ChNN will shine through. Please remember that ChNN allowed anyone showing up at a retreat to get the teachings of that retreat.

Access to the Digital Archive should show the same open hearted kindness.

Perhaps there needs to be a several long retreats each year where a lung reading can be held.

Perhaps on Sangha there can be ongoing practice groups for each of the Secondary Practices. Perhaps this could allow for regular and as-needed lung readings.

Maybe there can be residential schools at The Gars and Lings where access to lung readings from living lineage holders is possible.

Maybe if we collaborate and do our best then the transmission lineage of ChNN will prosper.

Yes, it is wonderful that Vajra Dance and Yantra Yoga also prosper but these should not be forced on those who just want to practice the Dzogchen Transmission lineage of ChNN.

Best wishes

CHNN indeed is a very very kind and precious Master! In the way he taught and presented the Teachings and the way he has guided confused ones like myself. May his teachings and blessings benefits everyone!
