Book recommendations for a newbie

Post by escvnte »

Hello everyone.

I apologize if this isn't the right sub-forum to ask for books advice.
I tried surfing the other areas of the forum, but I was completely lost......
I would just like to learn more about Buddhism, the philosophy itself, before maybe go to a school for Monks.
What books would you guys recommend to a newbie totally unfamiliar with Buddhism?
I'm looking particularly for books about Tibetan Buddhism.
Are any books written by His Holiness the Dalai Lama appropriate for the topic? Or are there any other books out there by other Buddhists that i'm unaware of?
I cited His Holiness because I only know him and because, right now, I totally feel like Neo asking for Morpheus advice, when it comes to Buddhism. I would like to know more about it.

I apologize if this isn't the right place to ask for books advice.

Feel free to move this thread in any other more appropriate sub-forum, if this isn't the right place.

Thank you.

There is a series of books by HH Dalai Lama and Ven. Thubten Chodron that I think is good:

There is also a prior book, Buddhism: One Teacher, Many Traditions, they authored which looks at and compares Tibetan Buddhism with Theravada (mainly) and Chinese Mahayana (a few times) which is very good if you already have some knowledge.

If you are interested in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, then a great online source of teachings from the founders of the FPMT is:

The antidote—to be free from the suffering of samsara—you need to be free from delusion and karma; you need to be free from ignorance, the root of samsara. So you need to meditate on emptiness. That is what you need. Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Thank you so much, guys! :anjali:

That's definitely a very huge list of books, Soma999.
It might probably take me years to study them all completely.

And, Bristollad.
Thank you for your suggestions, as well.
Unfortunately I only ever practiced Catholicism, before "studying" some Scientology on my own. So I never had the chance to read anything about Buddhism, until now.
So some terms are still very "out of my league", for now.
But with reading some books and time, I hope to understand the concepts and terms much better.

Thank you very much, really.

Blessings.
