The Zen master meets a woman

Post by Nils »

Once upon a time there was an old Zen master who lived secluded in a small hut in the mountains. His way was to take Buddha's teaching radically seriously. Buddha had taught to live without attachment and without rejection. So the Zen master accepted all things that came into his life. And he let go of everything that wanted to go. Thus he always remained at peace. He radiated a serene composure and was kind to all who met him. He bowed to everything, to his fellow men, to his destiny, to life, and of course to the statue of Buddha Amitabha that stood on the small altar in his hut.

He was a modest and frugal man. The only thing that mattered to him was to be able to walk his path of enlightenment in his own way. Everything external was not important for him. For him only the inside counted. For him, only his spiritual path and the teachings of Buddha mattered. Every day he meditated for a few hours, read the holy scriptures, ate something and went for a walk three times a day. When visitors came to his secluded hut, he entertained them kindly. They received his blessing and left.

Thus he lived peacefully for many years. His spiritual energy increased more and more. He had an aura of peace, light, love and happiness. One day a beautiful young woman got lost in the mountains. She luckily found the old Zen master's hut and stayed overnight with him. Her life was filled with many chaotic relationships. But nowhere had she found real love and happiness. With the old Zen master, she felt really comfortable and secure for the first time in her life.

Therefore, she decided to stay with the Zen master for a few more days. The Zen master took everything as it came. So he agreed. After a few days, the young woman still had no desire to return to her worldly life in the big city. So she stayed a few more days. The days turned into weeks and the weeks into months. Then she declared that she now wanted to stay with him forever. The old man agreed to that as well. She wished to become his wife. The Zen master agreed. She wanted to have sex. The Zen master agreed to that.

The woman ran his household, cleaned his hut, cooked his food, and had a lot of fun with the old Zen master. They were a harmonious couple, as the Zen master agreed to whatever the woman suggested. He fulfilled all her wishes as far as he could. This was the kind of man the woman had always wanted. Although he was a little old on the outside, he still seemed very young on the inside. She even adapted herself somewhat to his spiritual path, began to meditate and to worship Buddha Amitabha. They read Buddhist scriptures together and sang spiritual songs. The woman blossomed and became more peaceful and happy herself.

But after three years, her old restlessness resurfaced. Life in the seclusion of the mountains became too boring for her. She longed for the noise and entertainment of the big city. She longed for her girlfriends. She also wanted to talk to women again. Therefore, she decided to leave the old man and return to her worldly life. The Zen master also agreed. His principle was not to be attached to anything, even though he had become accustomed to the woman in the meantime and had grown fond of her. If she wanted to go, then she was allowed to go. So she went.

Now the Zen master's life was very quiet again. He mourned for a while and then forgot about the young woman. Life is a transient dream. After a few years, this episode also seemed like a dream to him. There the woman stood again in front of his door. She had become a little older and wiser in the meantime. She had realized that she was much happier here in the mountains than in her old home. Being smart, she had brought all her girlfriends with her. They were all eager to meet the old Zen master. Now there was a lot of life in the hut. Women were constantly talking and laughing. The old master took it as it came. He learned to keep his spiritual energy even while dancing with the worldly energies.

After two weeks the girlfriends left again. But they came to visit more often now. So life was coherent for the woman. She stayed with the old Zen master and both were happy until the end of their lives. And after that they ascended to the paradise of Buddha Amitabha. There they now live on in love and peace. And one day both of them will return to earth as Bodhisattvas. The Zen master will incarnate as Chenrezig and the woman as the goddess Tara to show the restless people on earth the way to a life of peace and happiness.
