Silent Recitation of Mantra

Some practices such as Vajra Recitation use an internal silent Recitation, whereas sometimes in the context of mantra recitation the instruction is to verbalize mantra with sound. If there is a difference in function?

More specifically, this relates to Song of the Vajra. Master Namkhai Norbu usually taught us to sing this out loud with a good voice, which for me is excellent. However, for times we cannot do so, does singing Song of the Vajra internally have similar effectiveness? Is it useful to do so when needed?
