February 24, 1949: A bronze Buddha statue, reportedly weighing more than a ton, is installed in the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park in 1949. The statue, which was cast in 1790 in Japan, was bought by Gump’s in 1928 and displayed inside the iconic store before being donated to the park in memory of A. Livingston Gump.
