"How many monks are in China?
Buddhism has a history of 2,000 years in China. Now there are more than 13,000 Buddhist temples with about 200,000 monks and nuns."

from https://janetpanic.com/how-many-buddhis ... the-world/

Tim Kidd says in Quora:

"Now, my speculative answer is based on: Currently there are about 1.3 billion Chinese living in the People's Republic. Surveys have found that around 18.2% to 20% of this population adheres to Buddhism.

1.3 Billion Chinese
20% of population is Buddhist = 260,000,000
130,000,000 Male Buddhists
1,300,000 Buddhist Monks (1% of Male Buddhists)
0.1% of total population is a monk

"As you see, I've assumed the ratio of Male to Female Buddhists at 50:50, which may or may not be accurate. If we also assume that the ratio of monks to nuns has increased only moderately in favor of more nuns since ancient times (who knows, maybe it decreased or stayed more or less the same), there would be around 250,000 nuns."

"The ancient figures: During the Song Dynasty, in 1021 CE, it is recorded that there were 458,855 Buddhist monks and nuns actively living in monasteries.
The total number of monks was 397,615, while the total number of nuns was recorded as 61,240."
