Ice is melting on the North Pole

Post by Aemilius »

Ice - Surface melting revealed by the North Pole Environmental Observatory

Image

Since 2002, the multi-agency USA-Japan joint project entitled "North Pole Environmental Observatory" has deployed Web Cameras along with instruments that monitor air, ice and ocean conditions. The cameras and instrumentation are deployed in Spring on an ice floe drifting southward from the North Pole (drift maps are shown below). The Web Cams provide an otherwise unobtainable view of sea ice conditions throughout the Arctic summer.

There is some suspicion around concerning the possible cause for there not being googlemap pictures or webcame pictures available from the North Pole, while googlemap images are easily found of Antartica. Are they hiding something from us? What?

No one is hiding anything:

There are just more interesting satellite photos to see than the north pole.

Yes they are (hiding something), North Pole is a forbidden territory, it seems.

"I just tried both. Google maps does not show latitudes north of 85 degrees north or south of 85 degrees south. So the North pole is not on Google maps, while large portions of Antarctica are."

Someone - and I'm not going to guess who - seems to be blissfully(?) unaware than Antarctica is a continent.

If you wanted to install a physical South Pole, you could make it the size of the Eiffel Tower and anchor it through hundreds of feet of ice to the solid bedrock. If you wanted to install a physical North Pole, put it on a boat and anchor in the right spot.

The quote is from the North Pole -discussion link given in the previous post by Norwegian and it was written by "Guido Van den Heuvel; Astronomer, science nerd, software engineer, space geek". You can look at the discussion there, it goes on and on..
Seriously, if you can photograph the ice-sheet on Antarctica from space, you should be able to that on the North Pole also.

This isn't a new thing. Shipping lanes are opening up and resources such as gold, diamonds, and natural gas are becoming available. Now that so much North Pole ice is going away we are already fighting over who gets to exploit the new opportunities up there.

The point of my post was to respond to Amelius’ complaints about absence of photos.

At least we know the numbers.
Pictures are spectacular, but the ice melt level is measured and cross-checked in many ways (Wikipedia).

http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

Definitely the space facilities that are looking towards the Earth are increasing, giving the precious data as never before.
And pictures bring any usual person an awareness and insight closer to what is going on with climate.
