Refugee Rescue doco

Post by Kim O'Hara »

Follow a group of ordinary people, doing extraordinary things. They have left their homes to help others find theirs. This timely and contemporary one hour documentary addresses a global crisis and takes an inside look at the volunteers who risk their lives daily, in order to provide safe passage to the many refugees arriving in desperation and hope, at the island of Lesvos.

By the end of December 2015, it was estimated that over a million men, women and children crossed the sea to Europe, but tragically 3,735 of those souls were lost to it – a number still rising dramatically in 2016. This film documents Lifeguard Hellas (International Greek Lifeguards), the volunteers who are stationed at Lighthouse Molyvos Beach, and the watchmen of Zone 5, on Lesvos Island. It is because of their efforts and acts of such selflessness, that so many lives have been saved.

This film takes a detailed look into the lives of the volunteers, providing insight into the highs and lows of life on the island. From their motivations for coming to help, the arrivals and rescues of refugees, the surprises, difficulties and living conditions, understand how they grapple with the forces of nature along the volatile coast of the Aegean Sea.

Many members here will recall that one of our long-time mods worked on Lesvos with these refugees.
