I was a Starbucks barista (sorry, "partner") for a couple of years before law school. I wish like hell I'd had a union when I was there.

I love AFSCME, was a member for years in another state position...my current workplace is not unionized I don't think, I am contemplating inviting them in....the last time I did it got me blacklisted I think though lol. I helped to unionize my old agency, it was tough but worth it as they were going to basically turn us all into permatemps if we hadn't.KristenM wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 3:17 am I’m a union member, is anyone else here? I was a member of my public sector union for years; served as a shop steward for a while. Now I'm management. It was a good move for me professionally, but it did give me a little pang.

I never knew this about the AFSCME history.Johnny Dangerous wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 3:21 amI love AFSCME, was a member for years in another state position...my current workplace is not unionized I don't think, I am contemplating inviting them in....the last time I did it got me blacklisted I think though lol. Never too late to start a union…In 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated while in Memphis, Tennessee to support a strike by the African-American sanitation workers' union, AFSCME Local 1733.

Yeah, they have a pretty progressive history IIRC.KristenM wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 4:17 amI never knew this about the AFSCME history.Johnny Dangerous wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 3:21 amI love AFSCME, was a member for years in another state position...my current workplace is not unionized I don't think, I am contemplating inviting them in....the last time I did it got me blacklisted I think though lol. I’ve been an SEIU member for about 16 years.KristenM wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 3:17 am I’m a union member, is anyone else here? AFSCME proud.

I’m not a very good union member because I’m not active and mostly just do my job, but I’m so happy to have the union and for everyone who works actively in it and how hard they work and I vote and give feedback whenever I can.

I'm approaching 59 years old and have been a union member since I started working at 15.
In Australia the unions have lost their teeth, but I'd still rather be a member than not be a member.
I think of it like insuring your car. We pay too much for what we get but I'm not wealthy enough to go without it.

Me too. I just do my job and pay my dues. But dang, I read online that only 10% of workers are represented by a union. Quite a small number, if it's true.climb-up wrote: ↑Wed Aug 17, 2022 6:20 pmI’ve been an SEIU member for about 16 years.KristenM wrote: ↑Tue Aug 16, 2022 3:17 am I’m a union member, is anyone else here?
