Sizing of Avatars

Post by Sādhaka »

Is there a way that this forum can automatically-size any too-large of an avatar down to its maximum-allowed size, no matter what?

Of course it won’t always look good, but I’d like to try more out; that is because on almost every image that I try, it simply says that the file is too large and rejects it outright, instead of just sizing it down.

If I remember correctly, the forum software has a fixed size limit on all uploaded files, not just for avatars, but it will re-size any avatar image once you get it uploaded.
That gives you two answers:
1. Ask David to increase the maximum allowed upload size. (I don't actually think increasing it is a good idea, but he may not care.)
- or -
2. Do a quick, rough down-size with any convenient app (take a screenshot if nothing else is available) to an image much bigger than the avatar needs but smaller than the upload limit, and then let the forum software reduce it further to what is needed.

Repeated copying loses quality, as you may know, but reducing 4000 px to 200 px loses so much quality that any other losses along the way don't matter.

Thanks Kim O’Hara.

Number 1. is kind of what I was hinting at I guess.

However I’ll have to take into consideration your other ideas in the meantime and/or if David can’t/won’t increase the maximum allowed upload size.

I should have differentiated file-size vs scale, as relevant factors too. It seems that file-size is what seems to be the most limited here on avatars.

There's lots of websites where you can upload an image and it will resize it suitable for an avatar. That's what I did when I made mine.

I had forgotten about them, probably because I have been able to do my own for at least fifteen years. I'm actually a bit surprised that they still exist.

File size of uploads is limited, and then pixel size of the avatar is set by the forum software - to a maximum of 160 px on the longest side, I think.

One can open the image in paint or a similar program, if not using windows, and resize to a percentage of the original. It takes a few seconds.

I found a simple program:

https://www.simpleimageresizer.com/image-compressor

But then when I went to upload the resized image, I got:

“This file cannot be displayed because the extension webp is not allowed”

Open it in paint or some other app and save it as jpg or jpeg or png file.
