Durga or Kali

Post by Mantrik »

I brought these amulets back from Rajasthan some time ago.

Do they depict Kali, as claimed, or Durga?

(Ignore the more modern Yantras.)

Ta. :)

I also bought a bunch of these in Rajasthan almost 20 years ago. At the time, I was told the multi-armed deity was a local Goddess. I don't remember the name.

I was told the standing one was Kali, with the dog underneath, and the one on horseback was a local Durga variant.
The standing one in crisper versions, has the severed head and bowl.
There are soooo many!
Bought these in 1999 I think, probably Jaisalmer. Should be camels if local! lol :)

The ones on horseback are of a local Rajasthani male deity, Veer Tejaji.
A few people have said the standing ones are Kali, but It looks like they are Bhairab/Bhairava with the dog. So none of them are Kali or Durga. lol :)

I offer both MyoHo RenGe Kyo ..Kahli Ka is my fav goddess for she eats my anger and jealousy and greed and all those ugly aspects of being a sentient in samsara.

In my system of Buddhism these gods and goddesses are part and parcel to samsara and are part of us...their function can be enhanced in our daily life through offering MyoHo RenGe Kyo...

it's my take on it though and other Nichiren Schools point to this as well...but they don't concentrate on them that much..

Although Nichiren Shonin did inscribe both Indra and Brahma on our object of worship the Gohonzon..

He was one with these forces in nature ...
He challenge the other Buddhist schools to basically rain making during a drought...he won ..they did their thing and nothing happened and He did His and voila ...rain...

Also there is this Shinto god protector of Japan called Hachiman.. He was being led to a beach to be beheaded by hired Ronin...

Being a priest he got to pray to a Hachiman shrine on the way...He demanded Hachiman's protection at this time .. He said Hachiman swore to protect the Votary of The Lotus sutra and if he does not protect me he would report him to Lord Sakyamuni Buddha and suffer the consequence of not protecting him as Hachiman is supposed to do..

so like this did not help the mood of the Ronin Samurai who really wanted to behead him now...

As the Executioner raised his sword a fireball lite the night sky ..like big time ...frightening all the Samurai away...they literally ran from the beach with Nichiren shonin shouting for them to come back and finish the job..

this event is actually taught to Japanese School children as part of their history...

so yeah the gods are real ...those amulets are beautiful ...

i think the one with the triangle is about Kundalini...the 8 petals are like our heart chakra..the other one is a mandala ...very cool pieces.

The Tantra on bottom right is Sri Yantra or Sri Chakra. It represents the Divine shakti.

No, it is a modern Kali yantra made by and for a Kali temple.
I know what the yantras are, as I said in the original post. ;)

The deity on horseback is now definitely defined as Kalki, an avatar of Vishnu. :)

The two 'dancing' ones are either Kali or Bhairav depending who is selling them. Rajasthanis selling very similar ones tell me it is Kali, which is what I was told 20 years ago, but ............ lol :)

The one with the ruby was made for a modern Kali group in the USA, Kali Mandir, and they are still being sold.
No mystery there. :)

It was the amulet figures I was trying to identify properly. The yantra pendants just happened to be in the pic.
