what happens to a sight?

Post by Hazel »

I see a red ball. It rolls away. What happened to my awareness of the ball?

Happy Pride month to my queer dharma siblings!

So consciousness is like water, taking the form of what's in it at the moment?

There's no awareness separate from the ball. I mean, there's more to it, but yeah.

A “You” didn’t see the ball.
Light reflected off the ball into an eye.
That light was converted into a neurological pulse
triggering a chemical reaction in the synapse of the brain.
Awareness of that event was experienced.
From that experience arose a dualistic conceptualization of an intrinsically existing self (you) and an intrinsically existing other (ball).
What the “you” witnessed was awareness of the event.
That awareness didn’t come from anywhere and didn’t go anywhere.

...
EMPTIFUL.
An inward outlook produces outward insight.

true dharma is inexpressible.

Also, it’s worth understanding there is no ball, at least in the way you are seeing one. Your mind created ‘red ball’ and assigned a label based on sense impressions which are constantly changing. So ‘red ball’ is actually part of ‘the imaginary nature’ to use a Yogacara model. Red ball was never separate from your mind.

Check out Stars of Wisdom by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso. The Lankavatara Sutra covers some of this too.

Ensuing discussion on Nihilism split to viewtopic.php?f=39&t=33988. Let's keep this thread on Hazel's question.
