Anyone know about the Red Yaman practice?

I looked it up on Himalayan Art, and the form depicted on the flyer, Rakta Yamari, seems to stem from a Sarma tradition tracing back to Mahasiddha Virupa that made its way to Marpa Lotsawa. So this may be unrelated to the usual Drikung Yamantaka if that's the case, or it could simply be that this form of Rakta Yamari wound up in the cycle revealed by Rinchen Phuntsok and the 1st Chungtsang Rinpoche, too. Either way it's an Anuttarayoga Tantra empowerment of wrathful Manjushri.

Since he's spending a good deal of time specifically on the completion stage of Rakta Yamari (Red Yamantaka), I would hazard a guess that this is one of Marpa's 13 mandalas given to Ngok. There are generally two systems of completion phase instructions--one more general to all Yamantakas in the Sarma tantras, and another that comes from Virupa. Either way, if he is teaching for the period noted on the flyer, this will be a pretty rare opportunity for those seriously inclined to practice.

The Red Yamari relates to the "Fiery Razor of Repelling" which is the sadhana used in the drupa of Jampel Shije She in a few ways.

The manual compiled for the drupa practice has many extracted parts compiled from various Yamantaka cycles. So for example the opening prayers of refuge and bodhichitta are taken from the tantra of Red Yamari. The Three types of compassion taken from the great explanitory tantra of Yamantaka, the 3 fold torma offering is taken from Kagyé. Some parts from the Secret Moon Assembly etc..

There are parts of the Drupchen that are pure visions from Rinchen Phuntsok and Nunden Dorje etc.

It seems Garchen Rinpoche is "opening the mandala" of this deity so so speak a bit more each year.

During the winter teachings here that passed recently at GBI, we webcast the torma offering and self generation sections of the sadhana. This year we will webcast the last morning session and the Tsog.

So the overall climate is becoming more inclusive in what is being shared.

Thanks for that info. It's interesting that he's teaching extensively on DzogRim related to Rakta Yamari, do you know if he's done this previously? Perhaps he feels people are ripe, as a result of the successive drupchens?

Cone,

This is the first time I have seen him giving this empowerment or instructions, at least in the u.s.

Reading through Kongtruls work in the treasuries I'm sure Garchen Rinpoche will give the unelaborated explanation of the completion stages. But we will see!

Wish I could make it to the teachings. Perhaps we can collectively pray for a webcast.

I will try to get some more info on what he is going to do and post it.

On their facebook page, they replied to a question on webcast and said, 'Yes' and the link would be posted later.

Lhasa,

You are speaking of Rinchen Cholings facebook? That would be excellent if they did.

I heard that there were attempts to get permission to webcast the empowerment via Garchen Institute, but didn't want to be premature and give people fake hope in case it didn't happen. Glad to hear that permission was granted and the world will get to tune in!

Once you get past the very basic stuff at the beginning of the article, there's actually a lot of depth to this one regarding the sources and significance of Rakta Yamari:

A quote from the Dudjom International Group that sums up Yamantaka quite nicely, in my humble opinion:
Jambel Shinje is the form in which Yamantaka enters the world in times of direst circumstance, when the world is filled with grievous difficulties, terrible dangers, great conflict and flagrant intolerance. His special powers annihilate the very root of all these troubles -- atmagraha, or self-cherishing. He turns the minds of living beings away from selfishness and hate, and leads them to universal loving kindness and compassion. He enters the mind of the practitioner and completely destroys the most stubborn, habitual tendencies to hold to the reality of the dualism of self and other that is the basis of all error, misery and samsaric rebirth.

Exactly what Rinpoche said today.

Does anyone know:

1. What the consort is holding in her right hand?
2. Why the mantra is different from the mantra in the Yamantaka Tantra?

I thought Fiery Razor was the Drikung Yamantaka that Rinpoche usually teaches?
