Poem "An open mind"

Post by cjdevries »

I wish I could say I've embodied the theme of this poem, but I haven't; not yet. However, this topic inspires me to focus on having a more open mind, because I know that's where real progress is found. Actually, writing this poem inspired me to want to think more deeply about how I can utilize my skills to come up with solutions to problems which I understand; knowing that it can be easier to understand a problem and to come up with an effective and meaningful solution when you have first hand experience with something. Here's this poem I wrote today about keeping an open mind:

“An open mind”

How do we get from here to there?
When here is so stifled,
And there is so free?

It starts with an open mind

An open mind is willing to see
That while the path may not be easy
It can be walked

An open mind is willing to adapt, change, and grow
Even when it is pushed out
of its comfort zone

An open mind is willing to entertain
all possible solutions

An open mind is willing to be wrong at first
In order to be right later

So much of this solution finding is done in communities
I think because each person’s perspective can show them things
Of which another person is blind to

And because each of us have experiences which are unique and valuable
Experiences that can make us well suited
to coming up with solutions to problems
That others see as unsolvable

What perspectives do you bring?
How does your experience give you an advantage,
One that you can leverage in order to solve a particular problem?

It starts with an open mind
"Please call me by my true names so I can wake up; so the door of my heart can be left open: the door of compassion." -Thich Nhat Hanh

"Ask: what's needed of you" -Akong Rinpoche

"Love never claims, it ever gives. Love ever suffers, never resents, never revenges itself." -Gandhi
