Kakudo Mitsunaga Dai-Ajari: 1st Visit to USA, October

Post by Meido »

Koryu Shugen Honshu and its associated organization International Shugendo Association (ISA) invite you to this remarkable event: the first visit of Kakudo Mitsunaga Ajari to the USA. This is a precious opportunity to receive empowerments and teachings from both him and his student Shokai Koshikidake Soke, Headmaster of the Mt. Koshikidake tradition of Shugendo.

KAKUDO MITSUNAGA DAI-AJARI is a Tendai Buddhist master and among the most eminent Japanese Buddhist figures today. He is famous as one of the "marathon monks" of Mt. Hiei, having completed the sennichi kaihogyo training (you may see a documentary featuring him below).

SHOKAI KOSHIKIDAKE SOKE is the Headmaster of Mt. Koshikidake Shugendo, and chief priest of Kannon-ji temple where that tradition has historically been centered. Aside from being the heir of his family's Shugendo tradition, he trained as a Tendai priest and in the Shugendo of Mt. Haguro's Kotaku-ji Shozen-in.

The event location is Korinji, a Buddhist monastery on 17 forested acres 50 miles northwest of Madison, Wisconsin (about 7 miles north of the town of Reedsburg). Registration is limited.

Meido, that documentary was so inspiring.

These marathon monks must be so full of love for sentient beings to do such a thing.

It was interesting to see all the lay people who venerated him.

I wonder how common that is in Japanese towns.

I asked a Japanese friend about kaihougyou and she had never heard of it.

The fellows who do this are very rare. I think there might be 5 guys currently alive who have done the sennichi kaihogyo. (1000 day practice). There is only one place where this is practiced - Mt. Hiei near Kyoto.

If you can meet this fellow, its a tremendous opportunity.
There is no suffering to be severed. Ignorance and klesas are indivisible from bodhi. There is no cause of suffering to be abandoned. Since extremes and the false are the Middle and genuine, there is no path to be practiced. Samsara is nirvana. No severance achieved. No suffering nor its cause. No path, no end. There is no transcendent realm; there is only the one true aspect. There is nothing separate from the true aspect.

Indeed.

We're grateful that for his first visit to the USA he's agreed to come here: a rather humble place in rural Wisconsin, of all places.

It is wonderful, Meido. Truly. Thank you for all your efforts in making it possible.

ANNOUNCEMENT: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED to 2021

Regretfully, Mitsunaga Ajari and Koshikidake Soke have decided that due to the uncertainty surrounding travel during the current pandemic, we will reschedule this Wisconsin event.

The good news is that new dates are confirmed: SEPTEMBER 3-5, 2021. All other event details will be essentially the same.

I'll announce this event again later this year when registration reopens. In the meantime, there will be a number of USA events in 2020 led by priests here. Info on these (and, link to join the mailing list) at www.shugeninternational.org
