Tibetan English Dictionary by H. Jaschke

Post by Humanic »

I saw a copy of this dictionary in a local shop and I am considering buying it.
Anyone have any opinions about it, one way or another?
It os very dated but looks to contain most of the common words needed for a beginner, but I am also aware it may not be very useful for dharma terminology.

Jäschke was a missionary. I was made to use his dictionary in a university course in the 90s. Couldn't recommend it.

Aren't digital dictionaries the way to go? I wish we had those back then.

Thanks for your reply.
I have a few digital dictionaries, but I prefer hard texts. Not sure why.
I have the Das dictionary, but the writing is so small that I can barely read the entries.
Looking for a good alternative. I am currently in Nepal, so I don't have access to ordering from Amazon etc.

David Curtis of the Tibetan Language Institute recommends the Jaschke dictionary to his beginner students. I bought it, but I haven't actually used it. At this stage, I just tend to go online despite having several other hard copy and electronic dictionaries as well. It would be useful if someone could comment on how the Jaschke dictionary compares to the Das one. Maybe they all have their place.

Thanks for your reply.
I was hoping for the same. Some input as to how this dictionary measures up compared to others like the Das dictionary.
I am not advanced in my Tibetan language studies, so I was wondering if this was worth getting.

Just get the "Tibetan Dictionary" app, it's a red icon. And this: https://www.thlib.org/reference/diction ... nslate.php

Not sure how that app is related to my specific question about the Jaschke dictionary.
I am guessing that you have not read the thread.

I know about that dictionary, but it's very old. I suggested the app because it's much better. You can find pretty much any term you are looking for, and there will be definitions from many of the important Tib-Eng and Tib-Tib dictionaries used today.

Sorry I left it so late. Das included Jaeschke's stuff in his dictionary.
