Interview with Palden Gyatso, Imprisoned for 33 Years

Post by cjdevries »

I was deeply moved by this interview of Palden Gyatso, which was conducted by Annie Lennox. He details some of the abuses he suffered in Chinese prison, and discusses his work of raising awareness for prisoners who have suffered and still suffer.
He also talks about how a person must develop their mind and focus on meditation when faced with torture, rather than dwelling too much on the anger that is felt in the moment of the suffering. It was due to the work of Amnesty International that led him to be freed:
"Please call me by my true names so I can wake up; so the door of my heart can be left open: the door of compassion." -Thich Nhat Hanh

"Ask: what's needed of you" -Akong Rinpoche

"Love never claims, it ever gives. Love ever suffers, never resents, never revenges itself." -Gandhi
