Always loved this song. So fun to strum on guitar!

When I was a teenager, I was the music minister for Janetville Pastoral Charge, basically an organist. I've a lot of objections to Christianity, but they make some good music, and write some good poetry, even if it is ultimately optimistic fancy.

Come, come with me out to the old churchyard,
I so well know those paths 'neath the soft green sward.
Friends slumber in there that we want to regard;
We will trace out the names in the old churchyard.

Mourn not for them, their trials are o'er,
And why weep for those who will weep no more?
For sweet is that sleep, though cold and hard
Their pillows may be in the old churchyard.

I know that it's vain when our friends depart
To breathe kind words to a broken heart;
And I know that the joy of life is marred
When we follow those friends to the old churchyard.

But were I at rest 'neath yonder tree,
Oh, why would you weep, my friends, for me?
I'm so weary, so wayworn, why would you retard
The peace I seek in the old churchyard?

Why weep for me, for I'm anxious to go
To that haven of rest where no tears ever flow;
And I fear not to enter that dark lonely tomb
Where our saviour has lain an' he conquered the gloom.

𝄆 I rest in the hope that one bright day
Sunshine will burst through these prisons of clay,
And old Gabriel's trumpet and the voice of the Lord
Will wake up the dead in the old churchyard. 𝄇

The minister never let me have the congregation sing this one for obvious reasons. We were an everyday liberal Canadian parish, not some fundamentalist sect from the States. But oh boy do I love me some fundamentalist hymns.

Well may thy servants mourn, my God,
the Church's desolation.
The state of Zion calls aloud
for grief and lamentation.
Once she was all alive to thee
and thousands were converted.
But now, a sad reverse we see.
Her glory is departed.

Some few like good Elijah stand
while thousands have revolted.
In earnest for the heavenly land
they never yet have halted.
With such religion doeth remain
for they are not perverted.
May they all through men regain
the glory that's departed.
Then, the monks sang this gāthā:

These bodies are like foam.
Them being frail, who can rejoice in them?
The Buddha attained the vajra-body.
Still, it becomes inconstant and rots.
The many Buddhas are vajra-entities.
All are also subject to inconstancy.
Quickly ended, like melting snow --
how could things be different?

The Buddha passed into parinirvāṇa afterward.

Sing along! lol

Dagenham Dave
The Stranglers

Dave was from out of town
Manchester's likely too
Had read De Sade to Marx
More read than me and you
Scaffolding pays good bread
It pays for drugs and kicks
Dave only had one love
Had no real need for chicks
Dave was so far ahead
But now he's dead

I'm not going to cry
I bet he hit that water high

I guess he lost control
And welcomed in the night
It was too much for him
What were his thoughts that night?
The River Thames is cold
It keeps on flowing on
But it left Dave alone
It just kept flowing on

There's city sickness here
But now he's dead

Late night a street in the west of the city
There was a place there where he lost himself
Strange feelings did he feel there
Strange people did he meet there
Angry sounds did he hear there
Like the howling of wolves!

Songwriters: Stranglers (not Morissey)

Keyboards thru a wah-wah, instead of the usual guitar, was new to me back then.

"Fell in love at the fais-do-do
The pop was cold and the coffee chaud"

Friend of Johnny Cash. Consummate showman. Touring alone, using the house band at a "fais-do-do": Cajun dance party, not much different from this!

Pure joy

Another great showman/actor. (In CW music, RN might as well stand for "rather nasal".)
