During ARTICULATE research days on 23.10.2019 we hosted a 5-hour John Cage marathon. Seven harpsichord players were accompanied by visual artists to recreate a psychedelic evening with drawings, 360° projections and a lot of sounds, ranging from Mozart to noise.

Initiative by Frank Agsteribbe, visual concept by Janna Beck & Wouter Steel
Harpsichord players: Frank Agsterib, Yves Senden, Daniel Valkenborgh, Jeroen Malaise, Luc Vanvaerenbergh, Korneel Bernolet, Liselotte Sels

HPSCHD (pronounced as initials: eɪtʃ-piː-ɛs-siː-eɪtʃ-di:, although Cage himself said the title is "Harpsichord") is a composition for harpsichord and computer-generated sounds by American avant-garde composers John Cage (1912–1992) and Lejaren Hiller (1924–1994). It was written between 1967 and 1969 and was premiered on May 16, 1969, at the Experimental Music Studios at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.

HPSCHD was performed from tape in Helsinki in early 1970's, as part of a contemporary music event. The version in question lasted for more than two hours. People were walking around during it, but you could also sit down if you wanted, there were some chairs.

“We are each living in our own soap opera. We do not see things as they really are. We see only our interpretations. This is because our minds are always so busy...But when the mind calms down, it becomes clear. This mental clarity enables us to see things as they really are, instead of projecting our commentary on everything.” Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo.

Thus shall ye think of all this fleeting world:
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream;
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.
