Book on Republican Era Chinese Buddhism?
Is there any definitive book on this topic?
Re: Book on Republican Era Chinese Buddhism?
I've only read part of it, but "Anarchy in the Pure Land" by Justin Ritzinger covers the life of Master Taixu and the Maitreya School which is mostly during the Republican Era. I think the focus is on Taixu's thought and Buddhist Modernist reform in China from around 1910 to WWII, but it looks like it talks about Taixu's disciples and Maitreya worship from the civil war era through the early 2000s (in PRC and ROC).

Holmes Welch's works would be a good place to start.
