Gelug teachers teaching online

Post by Könchok Thrinley »

Hi,

I have a desire to explore the Gelug tradition a bit and would be quite interested to find out more about Gelug teachers who teach online. Do you have any tips for good gelug teahcers with online presence? (Ofc without the spooky gyalpo spirit on their altar)

I know about HH Dalailama (and plan to follow his teaching on praise of dependent origination this weekend) and also about Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

Also I have noticed that the Gelug teachers often teach mostly about some text like lamrim, etc do they give sometimes also lungs for practices, such as Lama Tsongkhapa Guruyoga or such?

You don't understand German or Tibetan, do you?
There are many online lectures from Meditation in all day life to Lamrim to developed emptiness studies to HYT.
But the teachers speak Tibetan and it is translated to German.

There are many options. FPMT centers stream teachings from Rinpoches, Geshes, and westerners all over the world--too numerous to mention.

Also, yes there are options for both sutra and tantra, many of the classic Nalanda/Pandit texts, as well as, opportunities to receive transmission/lung--However, this is less frequent.

A couple to note

Semi-retired bay area teacher Geshe Ngawang Dakpa is teaching on Saturdays right now through Tse Chen Ling center (FPMT)
Kadampa Center (FPMT) Raleigh, NC
There is a center somewhere in Canada that streams quite regularly

Also;
Do Ngak Dargye Ling--Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Jampa (San Jose, CA)
Do Ngak Kunphen Ling--Geshe Dhargey (Redding, CT)
Awakening Vajra International--Khen Rinpoche Geshe Gyalten (HE Choden Rinpoche's Heart Disciple) teaches online
Gaden Shartse Thubten Dhargye Ling (LA, CA)
Sera Je has a presence in both NYC and California
many more...

Ja meine Deutsche is nicht gut. Ich glaube ich kann verstehe klein Deutsch aber nur A1 Wörter und Sätze. Schade. :D And that is about it. It is a shame tho. Plenty of dharma in german.

Generally I have noticed that Gelug teachers give less lungs and etc than other lineages. Why is that? Is it because most common practices are generally sutra based anyway?

And does one need lung for Lama Tsongkhapa guruyoga? And how is it with the six session guruyoga?

Just curious about this.

Lungs are given on request and people don't really request them, my teacher regularly gives lungs of texts after teachings and practices as requested. You'll also find a lot of teachers that teach in Tibetan give the lung as the teaching is a lung-tri, His Holiness the Dalai Lama does this a lot.

For Gaden Lha Gyama I don't think lung is essential but it's good to receive and pretty easy to get from any geshe. Six session guru yoga, I've never received the lung of but it's given as a tantric commitment.

As for OP, as Shaun said check out each FPMT centre most are teaching via zoom now a days. Lama Yeshe Ling in Canada have weekly teachings from Geshe Sonam Ngondrup, Jamyang London has weekly teachings from Geshe Tenzin Namdak. You'll find Lama Zopa Rinpoche gives enough to take up most your time listening to.

Yes, my experiences have been that lungs/transmissions/initiations are overall not very frequent, but I expanded my boundaries a bit and that changed somewhat.

Many people practice Lama Tsongkhapa guruyoga without the lung, but it is certainly recommended and some of the explanations about the visualizations, etc... can be restricted to those who have received HYT in the lineage.

Six session guruyoga is restricted to those who have received HYT initiation and is a daily practice commitment for all who have had initiation. Both generation and completion stage practices of any HYT deity can be incorporated into six session guru yoga. It is taught by some Lamas, that six session guruyoga can, and perhaps should, be regarded as one's heart practice where nothing else is required. However, this is not a shortcut and other practice commitments must be honored.

There are two centers by me that have online classes and recordings. The first is Deer Park Buddhist Center in Wisconsin. They were holding classes over zoom, but I believe they are just uploading the audio at the moment but I am not sure. There is also the Indiana Buddhist Center which is holding zoom classes for people to join. If you are interested in youtube classes Sravasti Abbey also uploads many dharma talks and has many visitors come to speak.

Keep your eyes out Jhado Rinpoche will be in North America throughout November. Not sure how much or what will be online or not. From my experience any empowerment is likely to not be online. However, transmission can be another story

The Namgyal Monastery in Ithaca, NY offers several online courses, check it out: https://www.namgyal.org/event/2021-fall ... r-16-2021/

I'm taking the Key to the Middle Way course, it's 12 1.5 hour online teachings on a text by HHtDL, taught by Geshe Lobsang Dhondup, classic setup: Geshe speaks in Tibetan, Palden Oshoe translates to English (very well), questions at the end. The teachings are recorded, so if you join a class late, you can catch up.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily ...

Do you know if the other teachings are streamed?

a couple other offerings I don't think I mentioned in previous postings:

There is a center in Long Beach, CA where his HHDL has taught and given initiation in the past. They have online teachings.

https://www.gstdl.org/our-courses/on-going-teachings

Drepung Loseling in Atlanta, GA has moved to online offerings. I have had an interest in the past, but never engaged. They seem to have a very structured approach and, in the past, seemed to require completion of certain "level" of teachings before moving on to others, etc... I don't know if this is true or not, but it is the vibe I got when I investigated their website years ago.

I figured as much Sera Jey NYC, and I imagine Minnesota, serve the local Tibetan community. Well, we can hope that a center with a western audience invites Rinpoche while he is here. The other option is that it might be time to really learn Tibetan.
