Geluk teachers to be aware of?

Post by Hazel »

Who are some living teachers that are good to follow?

I have my own teacher, but I'd like to hear about others and have my eye open for retreats.

I am already aware of Venerable Thubten Chodron and Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
Happy Pride month to my queer dharma siblings!

Actually the best thing to do would be to read Tsongkhapa's Lamrim in translation. Every Gelug is in one way or another referring to what he wrote. You might even find that going to the source brings out how much people have changed teachings as they have spread...

I am specifically looking for living teachers that I could possibly form a connection with for the purpose of - in the long run - partaking in their retreats or transmissions.

I also totally forgot to list His Holiness, whoops.

Ven. Robina Courtin is great - Australian nun. Allowed to give refuge etcetera by way of Lama Zopa Rinpoche. There's teachings available with her on youtube and Spotify. I think she resides in America at the moment...

Edit:
  • Geshe Tashi Tsering, I think he resides in Leeds (or London maybe?).
  • Also, Geshe Thubten Sherab, think he's mostly in India(?).
  • Khadro-La of course. I think she stays close to Lama Zopa at the moment
  • Does Yangsi Rinpoche teach? I know he's the president of Maitripa College...

Anyone authorized to teach within FPMT is a good start. There's also, Ling Rinpoche, Yangten Rinpoche, Geshe Tenzin Namdak, Geshe Graham Woodhouse, Jhado Rinpoche.

Until a few years ago he was the resident teacher at Jamyang Buddhist Centre London and visiting teacher to Jamyang Buddhist Centre Leeds, but he retired from FPMT when His Holiness appointed him abbot of Sera Mey monastery.

I guess B. Allan Wallace would count as something of a Gelukpa, I think he's fantastic.

I second this recommendation, but Rinpoche is actually headquartered in San Jose, CA now. From what I understand he was still travelling
some to the East Coast prior to Covid.

Also; Khensur Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Delek of Sera Jey (India)
Khen Rinpoche Geshe Gyalten (HE Choden Rinpoche's heart disciple)
Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche
HE the 7th Kyabje Yongzin Ling Rinpoche
Jangtse Choje Lobsang Tenzin Rinpoche (104th Ganden Tripa)
Kyabje Pari Rinpoche
Kyabje Gosok Rinpoche
Sera Mey Khen Rinpoche Ngawang Jorden
Geshe Tenley (MA)
Geshe Gelek Chodha (NC)
Many, many more...

Loden Sherab, Dagyab Kyabgön Rinpoche is worth mentioning. Although I believe he holds more lineages than only Gelug.
And Khen Rinpoche Geshe Pema Samten from Hamburg.
But both teach in German or German translation. The teachings take place without English.

If you're in Europe, also worth keeping an eye out for Geshe Tenzin Namdak, who became the resident teacher at Jamyang London when Khen Rinpoche Geshe Tashi Tsering was requested to return to Sera Mey to be Abbot. Geshe Namdak is Dutch and speaks good English.

There are also the resident teachers at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa in Italy - Geshe Tenzin Tenphel and Geshe Jampa Gelek.

Ah, thanks for the update. My cousin was Rinpoche's student and lived at Do Ngak Kunphen Ling for a time. I visited there, and we also took teachings from Rinpoche in DC. But that was a number of years ago and I haven't been in contact for a while.

He is currently teaching via Zoom from his center in San Jose, Do Ngak Dhargey Ling. There is a site for his new center, but it is not yet very developed and has little information. If you check the Do Ngak Kunphen Ling site you can access his calendar there.
