What Translation/Commentary do folks on here rely on for the study of Chandrakirti's Avatara? Thanks!

I like the one published by the Padmakara translation group and published by Shambala.

LTK's Illumination of the Thought (dgongs pa rab gsal) translated by J. Hopkins and others and George Churinoff's tanslation of the Bhashyam is helpful as well.

From a Gelug pov, Huntington is best. However, the introductory material is dubious.

You can find some of it here https://uma-tibet.org/. The entire work is a text that is part of the FPMT Basic prgram or Maters's program I don't remember which. I am not sure that I have permission to share.

how would you rate Geshe Michael as a translator?

I generally refrain from commenting on other translator’s work.

Sound policy.

I think I have heard you voice an opinion with which I agree, that there are a variety of Dharma concepts that have such depth of meaning and so many valences and contexts that it is simply better to leave them in Sanskrit or Tibetan. When this principle is abused, I generally find the translations unreadable due to being excessively idiosyncratic.

After a cursory inspection of this translation, it would seem that GMR does not agree with this principle. Translating, for example, 'Dharmadhatu' as "The realm of is" indicates to me that I am probably not going to be able to get much out of this translation.

So strange in this world, given all the patronage received by the Dalai Lama and Gelugpa scholars in general, that these classics of their founder are not multiply translated by reliable, credible scholar/practitioners!
