There is, but it is in the book, the Temple of Great Liberation:

Do you know why Rinpoche chose Tuscany as his base? I love Italy and wonder if there were more spiritual reasons to locate there besides the vineyards and nice way of living.

Thank you. Not a super exciting cause but one I can understand at least.

There are more hidden reasons behind the choice.
Monte Amiata is famous for its Mercury mines while the other side of the mountain, behind Merigar, has lots of Sulfur.
Mercury and Sulfur being the two main substances in Alchemical Lore, connected to the Solar and Lunar Channels, which would place Merigar Gompa on the Central Channel.
Monte Amiata is a Volcano , just like in Tenerife.
Besides that, a 19th century Christian saint and mystic, Davide Lazaretti, lived in the rugged mountains above Merigar ( his place can still be visited ) and he is said to have prophesized that in the next century ( meaning 20th century ) , a saint from the East would come.
All in all , the place seemed very "ripe" for CNN's work.

I think that Ismael may have had in mind the ruins of Lazaretti's hermitage and tower at the summit of Mount Labbro.

Regarding Lazaretti:

Some locals still remember the story of Lazaretti's prophecy, and see Rinpoche as the foretold saint from the East.
