The Sūtra on King Ajātaśatru's Questions on the Five Heinous Crimes (T508)

Post by Zhen Li »

Hello everyone. I have just completed a new translation. This was prompted upon reading the Nirvāṇa Sūtra and wondering about Ajātaśatru's eventual fate, despite his attainment of rootless faith.

This translation of T508 was published on September 22nd, 2021. It is a sūtra which details the destiny of Ajātaśatru who killed his father, King Bimbisāra. Having committed one of the five heinous crimes, he is not able to escape the fate of being born in hell. But after being born as a deva for multiple lives, he will eventually become a human again and attain pratyekabuddhahood. This sūtra, significantly, mentions rootless faith, which, when bestowed upon Ajātaśatru, will allow him to avoid being victim to a much worse fate.

PS -- p. 2, second line before the last one (above the footnotes) :
As is life in that ==> As his life in that...
