It can be like coming to a fork in the road and choosing the right path.
Or like a vigorous seed that outcompetes the noxious weeds.
Or like a strong wind blowing away a cloud, someone yelling "hey you!" to wake you from a nightmare.
Or like a medicine, a thorn removed, a life preserver, a treasure that puts an end to your poverty.
Ordinary things have benefits like this, yet a mantra is not an ordinary thing.

If a mantra is paired with bodhicitta, your wish to attain buddhahood in order to save all sentient beings, then the sky's the limit.

Karma is dependent on concepts. Usually concepts are words. Mantras are words not concepts. But the intention behind them is to purify obscurations. Based on this intention and simply the sound, the purification occurs as the conceptual mind is silenced and the original Buddha nature becomes apparent.

From the point of view of seeing, it is the how. You look at it, that's enough.

Conversely, what is it that causes past negative karma to linger? And for how long? And at what intensity? It’s not anything that’s outside of your mind. Ask that question first.

Then, the second question might better be, “why does reciting a mantra effect past negative karma, but reciting the chorus from, say, ‘Yellow Submarine’ has no effect? What’s different, what’s so special about a mantra?”

The word ‘purify’ is a bit misleading, I think.
I’ve never really liked it because it’s dualistic.

Try mantra for two weeks. See, IF it works. Then come back and tell us WHY it works.

It does not work for everybody Some just dislike the practice and prefer something else. There are tons of different meditation practices.

The mantra is like a guide on your way. If you trust this guide and let him guide you, you may find yourself on a more beautiful travel.

The mantra is like a medicine. If you trust the medicine and let it work deeply in you, it will cleanse you of the three poisons and reveal your nature.

The mantra is like a sun. If you open your window (have faith) and expose yourself to it, the garden of your heart will flourish.

The mantra is like a crystal. By contemplating it it will introduce you to your own clarity.

The mantra is your own Buddha nature calling you home. By trusting it you will find protection and refuge.

Trust the mantra, have faith, recite it with Boddicitta and you will see how it can work for you.

The resonance of the mantra will lift you.

We have much wood of ignorance. The mantra can burn it all and give you light and warmth.

Trust it, apply the teaching with a good heart and you will see the effect of its medicine.

Many years ago, a teacher explained the root of mantras. These days hundreds of mantras out there, but in reality,
4 or 5 seed sounds. For me, only 3.
It’s why I say mantrikas say differently, it’s a collection of various functions. And those functions are important to where one is is at.

There is a certain point where one stops with mantras.
