How many Vajrasattva 100-Syllable mantra is required for Ngondro?

Post by Tsering Gyurme »

Hello Dharma Wheel,

How many Vajrasattva 100-Syllable mantra is required for Ngondro?
I've read 100,000 and 1,000,000. I have also read that 100,000 = 600,000 Vajrasattva short mantra and that even tho it has equivalence the long mantra is still more indicated.

Do you know what I'm talking about?
Thank you

The first time I did it I did 100.000 long mantras and also 600.000 short mantras. But as Malcolm said, ask your teacher.

In "The Torch of Certainty" by Kongtrul it's 111.111 long plus 666.666 short. However my very conservative and traditional teacher cut down on the short for us--a lot.

So yes, ask your teacher.

2. I support Mingyur R and HHDL in their positions against lama abuse.

Lama: Even If you had died the 3 Jewels would still have protected you. (DW post by Fortyeightvows)

I followed the "The Torch of Certainty". The only ngondro book available at the time.

Not a ngondro, Siksa-samuccaya of Shantideva, which is the classical Indian treatise.

In the "purification" 8th chapter there is an advice on 100 syllable mantra of Vajrasattva - 8000 to purify a fault. And there are some additional instructions - not only a Vajrasattva, a pack of methods according to Sutrayana and Vajrayana, signs of accomplishment...

Yes, it would depend upon what your teacher says, but most accumulations are 100,000 and this
is actually performed as 111,000 to account for mistakes.

A little more than that, at least as I was taught.

111,111 -- counting each mala (of 108 or 111) as 100. So you're kind of doubling up on accounting for mistakes. :)
