Films of Laurence Brahm
Films of Laurence Brahm
A while back there was a brief thread on "Searching for the Lotus-Born Master". The film was not exactly well-received here!
More recently we have "Return of the Lotus-Born Master". I'll save my judgement for the moment, but I'm curious if anybody else has watched it and what their opinion is.

Re: Films of Laurence Brahm
I just watched it this past Friday. Based in both parts, I am still trying to save my judgements at this point...lol.
I will say that it is very interesting but the very "modern day" super scientific terminology being equated with the achievements Guru Padmasambhava I'm not entirely sure about.
However, there is a very good portion of the documentary that looks into Tertons, and specifically the role the dakini or consort has to play in the discovery of treasure. From what I've learned in the past, this part is pretty accurate.
Over all, I enjoyed both part with a very open mind. Tracking the course of the 8 manifestations through the Himalayas was great, in terms of seeing the places of interest in our tradition.

I thought both films had some great moments, the places visited, teachers met etc were great and then the scientific stuff started and it was a big turn off. A group of people , don't know what credentials they had, making comparisons without explaining the reasons why.
Shame... could have been really good.

It is really strange this need to verify everything in dharma using science. Like while science can be useful and it is for sure super interesting to see the brain changes and what not. But from some moment we have to realize that science won't be able/willing to explain everything in buddhadharma.

OK, this is my view, published elsewhere:
This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. The editing is ghastly, the cod physics is utter tosh, and there is no central concept beyond "woo-woo it's all Woo Woo". Some of the interviewees must know what they are talking about - they include Rabjam Rinpoche and Chokyi Nyima, for example. At the other end they include self-invented twaddle merchants who think that if you say "hard drive cloud quantum field akashic record wormhole dakini black hole download Guru Rinpoche energy multiple dimensions" fast enough you will look clever. News: you won't.
The film is an insult to anybody's intelligence and an insult to Buddhist spirituality. I would be embarrassed if friends saw it and asked me if that is what I am into, which is partly why I want to be on record saying how bad it is.

It looks as bad as Lingpupa described.
Re: Films of Laurence Brahm
A helpful tip: if you see anything that uses the word "quantum" and talks about things larger than a ten trillionths of a meter, just stop reading/watching, anything it's saying is probably BS.

What's missing in his films are interventions by Tulku Giorgio Tsoukalos (obvious incarnation of King Relpachen, "the hairy one") and Khenpo David Childress Rinpoche. No?

Lingpupa is spot on. I remember watching the first one and thinking it was ok at best, but I was hardly able to get through the first 10 minutes of the 2nd one. My second-hand embarrassment was just too intense. They interview some good people and some good lamas, and I wish they would just let them speak rather than pushing the quantum stuff so hard. I rolled my eyes so hard at the Camelot line, I'm surprised they're still in my head.
If you want a really good documentary on Padmasambhava, I highly recommend this one which is currently available to watch for free online through PBS:

I have watched the first one and, well, I am at a loss for words. It does have some entertainment value.
I will probably watch the second one.

Ok, "Return of the Lotus Born Master." Not able to make it even 5 minutes. With that said, there are options for visual media out there. Vajra TV was one--I don't think anything ever became of it nor was anything new ever added. Another I recently stumbled upon is:
