Is transmission needed to recite the Immaculate Confession Tantra?

Post by The Mantra Mongoose »

Hello all,

One of my favorite ways to practice confession is with me imagining my guru above my head and reciting prayers. I recently came across Dudjom Rinpoche saying in "Perfect Conduct" that reciting the Immaculate confession tantra while visualizing your guru above your head is one of the multitude of ways that a person can repair any breakages of samaya and vows. I wanted to know if a reading transmission is needed to use excerpts of this tantra for confession? I particularly like the 16th chapter that Patrul Rinpoche was said to have recited before he passed. I also want to know so i can ask my guru for the reading transmission if its needed because i find this tantra really beautiful and would like to study it. I guessing for just reciting excerpts a reading transmission would be recommended but not absolutely necessary? Any help would be appreciated.

there is the "Rudra's Lament" confession, right? i'm also interested if one needs lung for this.
true dharma is inexpressible.

Yes, you need lung. However, if you have strong faith in this shakpa, you can begin without lung as long as you make the strong intention that you will get the lung as soon as possible.

Which category of texts can one engage like this-- without a lung with the aspiration that one would get a lung as soon as possible?

Hey Javier,

Yes, as far as i know " Rudras Lament" is a section or chapter of the Immaculate Confession Tantra. there are so many wonderful confession prayers from this tantra. I came to know about it through Patrul Rinpoche's biography.

Hey Lama Pema,

Thanks for clarifying about this. I wont be able to see my Guru any time soon so ill have to just rely on my Guru yoga with confession for purification/ repairing samaya for now. I don't know if ill have the opportunity in the future to receive it from a lama so i don't want to make a false or lax intention so ill put it on the shelf for now.

Long confessions mainly just list one's possible infractions. At the end, the actual purification is accomplished by Vajrasattva. So just do Vajrasattva while enumerating your own downfalls and faults. There's nothing superior to Vajrasattva when doing purification, especially remembering/recognizing/Realizing Vajrasattva's wisdom mind and one's own Toot Guru's wisdom mind are one and the same thing.

Good luck & best wishes.

:good: Thank you lama Pema. Needed to hear this.
“Observing samaya involves to remain inseparable from the union of wisdom and compassion at all times, to sustain mindfulness, and to put into practice the guru’s instructions”. Garchen Rinpoche

For those who do virtuous actions,
goodness is what comes to pass.
For those who do non-virtuous actions,
that becomes suffering indeed.

Meant to say "Root Guru." I have double vision due to myasthenia gravis. So I make many typos. Sorry.
