The East Gate Of Amoghasiddhi

Post by Danny »

Amoghasiddhi, Buddha of the North.
I understand all the iconography of his Mandala, but curious about his eastern gate. I don’t wanna get too much into the why, but important if I could understand his eastern direction. Any help with information would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

“Curious about his eastern gate”
“Understand his east direction”

…what does that mean?
I think you will need to give the context in which this occurs.

It’s basically the cardinal directions and about energy flows in and out of the central Buddha’s mandala.
Other than that, basically I’m looking for information about that eastern side of the mandala. And how the central Buddha Amoghasiddhi “qualities” affects those energies.
I think that’s about as easy as I could keep it. Without letting in too much privacy of a practice.
Not trying to be deliberately aloof.

Padma, always respect your opinions. Have a crack at it, I’ll listen.

Not sure if this helps or is relevant, or you may know this already, but the cardinal directions in a practice/mandala visualization don't actually relate to those directions on a map.

East is the forward facing direction (regardless of what direction you're sitting), south is to your right, west is behind you, and north is to your left.

These directions also generally can relate to a Buddha family, e.g.:

Amoghasiddhi (north, left)
Amitabha (west, behind)
Ratnasambhava (south, right)
Akshobhya (east, in front)
Vairocana (center/above)

And then depending on the main deity, e.g., if Amitabha is the principal, then Amitabha and Vairocana would swap positions.

Also each of these Buddha families relates to a color and element (Amitabha - red/fire, Vairocana - white/space, Amoghasiddhi - green/air, Ratnasambhava - yellow/earth, Akshobhya - blue/water), as well as a klesha, corresponding wisdom and activity.

I'm not quite sure how the directionality relates to all of that though.

Oh, I have absolutely no idea!
But I always considered mandalas to be like fractals. Each of the Buddhas in the four (outer) directions of the general mandala, each one I imagine also has an eastern, northern, western and southern side in relation to where they sit on their lotus thrones, with even tinier Buddhas surrounding them creating even smaller 5Buddha Family mandalas, and then around those Buddhas, even more doing the same, and on and on, to infinity.
But that’s just me, I think. I don’t know that it is in any tantric text!
