Why are the Buddhist schools called Vehicles?

What else are considered vehicles by Buddhists? What does it mean?

Is the eightfold path and 4 noble truths and 5 precepts both in Mahayana Theravada and Vajrayana?

I find your words to be beautiful in alot of the threads I read. I especially liked the example of the cave being lit by a candle.
