Sanskrit/English translation from Vietnamese?

Post by thebuddhajourney »

Does anyone know the Sanskrit (and English name) Mantras of these Vietnamese translations/versions?

"Án lam xóa ha."
"Án ta phạ bà phạ, truật đà ta phạ, đạt mạ ta phạ, bà phạ truật độ hám."

What are these mantras?

CHÚ NHƯ Ý BẢO LUÂN VƯƠNG DA-RA-NI
CHÚ TIÊU TAI KIẾT TƯỜNG
CHÚ CÔNG ĐỨC BẢO SƠN
CHÚ PHẬT MẪU CHUẨN ĐỀ
CHÚ THÁNH VÔ LƯỢNG THỌ QUYẾT ĐỊNH QUANG MINH VƯƠNG
CHÚ DƯỢC SƯ QUÁN ĐẢNH
CHÚ QUÁN ÂM LINH CẢM
CHÚ THẤT PHẬT DIỆT TỘI
CHÚ THIỆN THIÊN NỮ

I have no knowledge about Vietnamese, but if you can find the Chữ Nôm for these then it would be possible for those who can reference Chinese to help you out.

I don't know what the first two things say, but I could look up the rest:

CHÚ NHƯ Ý BẢO LUÂN VƯƠNG DA-RA-NI == As-You-Will Jewel Wheel King Dharani Mantra
CHÚ TIÊU TAI KIẾT TƯỜNG == Disaster Eradicating Auspicious Spirit Mantra
CHÚ CÔNG ĐỨC BẢO SƠN == Meritorious Virtue Jewelled Mountain Spirit Dharani
CHÚ PHẬT MẪU CHUẨN ĐỀ == Cundi Dharani (I didn't find the title with "Phat Mau" in it, but Chuan De == Cundi)
CHÚ THÁNH VÔ LƯỢNG THỌ QUYẾT ĐỊNH QUANG MINH VƯƠNG == The Resolute Light King Dharani Of Holy Limitless Life
CHÚ DƯỢC SƯ QUÁN ĐẢNH == Medicine Master’s Dharani For Anointing The Crown
CHÚ QUÁN ÂM LINH CẢM == Quan Am’s Efficacious Response Dharani
CHÚ THẤT PHẬT DIỆT TỘI == The Seven Buddhas Dharani For Eradicating Offenses

Here's my 2 cents...
"Án lam xóa ha."
According to this site, the phrase is read as: 'Tịnh pháp giới chơn ngôn: Án lam tóa ha'. In Chinese, it should be as: 净法界真言 (The Pure Dharma Realm True Words) and it's a way longer text and this site has the same dharani name but a shorter text: 唵嚂 / An làn or 'om ram'. I have no idea what is 'tóa ha' but am speculating that it's 'svaha'?
"Án ta phạ bà phạ, truật đà ta phạ, đạt mạ ta phạ, bà phạ truật độ hám."
See Vietnamese source #2 & Śunyata / śuddhā mantra There are Chinese Mahayana & Vajrayana commentaries on this but that's your homework. In the Chinese Mahayana Tradition, this corresponds with 净三业真言 (The Pure Threefold Karmas True Words)
What are these mantras?
CHÚ NHƯ Ý BẢO LUÂN VƯƠNG DA-RA-NI
CHÚ TIÊU TAI KIẾT TƯỜNG
CHÚ CÔNG ĐỨC BẢO SƠN
CHÚ PHẬT MẪU CHUẨN ĐỀ
CHÚ THÁNH VÔ LƯỢNG THỌ QUYẾT ĐỊNH QUANG MINH VƯƠNG
CHÚ DƯỢC SƯ QUÁN ĐẢNH
CHÚ QUÁN ÂM LINH CẢM
CHÚ THẤT PHẬT DIỆT TỘI
CHÚ THIỆN THIÊN NỮ
As I understand it, the Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist Tradition is heavily influenced by East Asian Buddhism, chiefly from the Chinese Mahayana Buddhist Tradition. The above are just 9 out of what is known as the Daśa Cula Mantra (The Ten Small Mantras) 十小咒 which is in the Chinese Mahayana Chán Morning Liturgy. Missing from the list is 'The Pure Land Rebirth Spiritual Mantra' (shorter title in Chinese: 往生淨土神咒) or the longer title is 拔一切業障根本得生淨土陀羅尼 (Uprooting Of All Fundamental [Karmic] Retributions (For) Birth In The Pure Land Dharani) or the Vietnamese is here. The CHÚ THIỆN THIÊN NỮ is Dharani #10. That Vietnamese site has a long list of dharanis that you can try to find and match the full text for each of the 10 but no English translation is available.
