Olympics

Anyone else (besides me) watching some of the Olympics?

I don't watch too much sports, but do like the international events like World Cup and Olympics. It's only once every 4 years and gives an opportunity to see some sports that don't normally get much airtime, including archery, shooting sport (target shooting), table tennis, and others.

For this Olympics they officially added surfing and skateboarding. How cool is that?

In the women's skateboarding street event, two 13-year-olds won gold and silver.

Judo.

No flashy Ippons there^, but still good matches.

There are a couple other interesting events too; but I never really make time to watch the olympics, and this year is certainly no exception.

I'm not into sport karate to much so see how it goes.

IDK, there are different ranges of sport Karate, some of the JKA- style competition gets pretty good.

I would've liked to follow some of the events, but everything has been moved to PPV channels, at least in Europe, and I can't be bothered with paying a subscription for something I won't really exhaust completely.

At any rate, the events I usually like to watch, is track and field related stuff, gymnastics (artistic and rhythmic), fencing, football, handball, and shooting.

Alright, Karate (I think they got Tae Kwon Doe too, which I’m not an big fan of; but respect for it getting into the game), skateboarding, surfing, archery, fencing; I think that I’m pretty onboard on these said things.... And Kendo? There’d better be Kendo.

And weightlifting; however, there seems seems to be some strangeness going on in this category... We’ll see how it plays out....

I'll be watching the women's golf from 4-7 August, rooting for Jodi Ewart Shadoff, though I expect the Koreans will win all the medals.

True. JKF also has some really good kumite.

Btw, how are people watching?

I paid for the silly Peacock streaming app, but they don’t have replays of the stuff I want to see, just crappy little 1-4 minute montages and such.

Been watching mainly on tv. For size. Also a little on my phone which is difficult to follow but using CBC which is free for phone when I do.

I'm old, so I still do the old fashioned way; on television. NBC, NBCSN, USA network, CNBC, Telemundo.

Fun fact for those who like watching table tennis but don't play it: the regulation size of ball was increased some years ago (for the 1996 Olympics, from memory) to slow the game down enough that people could actually follow it on TV.
Bigger ball = more air resistance = slower play (still very fast, though!)

A enjoyed seeing rugby sevens, but the game is pretty fast. I'm hoping they'll add rugby union at some point.

Baseball has been interesting. Seeing Israel play has been pretty novel. US vs Japan tonight. A Japan vs Korea final would be epic and stressful.

Judo was also exciting.

I can see sailing from my area, but never ventured to the seaside in a while. Don't want to get caught in any crowds and get the delta variant. :coffee:

Because cosmopolitanism has taken such a hit in the last decade, I'm happy to take it in any form that it appears - so I've been enjoying the Olympics. The world needs it.

On the sporting front, I've been really appreciating the athletics. I never realised how aesthetically pleasing the great runners are.
