It's my father's and my lama's birthday.

In general I find Valentine's Day just as ridiculous as Mother's day. It's somehow strange to celebrate love only once a year.

In its modern form it was largely invented by an American greeting card company, cynically (or pragmatically) exploiting a really loose collection of traditions and myths from Europe. Knowing that, I have no great respect for it. Any excuse for chocolates i okay, I think, and so is any excuse for being nice to others, but that's as far as it goes.

Every day is a good day for love and chocolate. But if I didn't get my wife a card, she'd be mad at me.

This day seems to be the test of our love.

I find that even people who say they don't believe in such a filthy, exploitative, capitalist holiday... somehow, deep down, they do. The culture is powerful.

I predict my wife and I will talk about how we hate commercialism of holidays, etc. lol. But first, some kind of romantic gesture is required, it is mandatory...especially for me:)

A day to remember love. It's a quality we have in common with the buddhas.

I'm trying to take special care of my husband and cats, and be less of a #$&@ today

This could be the beginning of a poem.

It's good to have a day to remind people how important Love is. Buddhism strives to do this every day for those who engage in it's practice. And although some people might say Valentine's Day is arbitrary, I beleive it celebrates an important connection between people.

What makes me sad sometimes though is the people who are alone on Valentine's Day and don't want to be. Or are yearning to be with someone they Love. Well, Love is Boundless like space, and if we beleive in it enough no distance can keep Loved ones apart. That is my two cents. :broke:

V day reminds me of this comparison service and others. It also reminds me of two naked lovers eating candy in bed while the sweet smell of dead flowers slowly fades.

I'm sort of split on the matter.

On the one had I hate the idea of HAVING to do something on this day or it means you just don't love your partner at all. That and all the money and price hikes.

On the other hand, having a day picked out to do something is good for both partners because it is something you can plan around. It doesn't have to be valentine's day per se, but it's a lot easier to do something romantic when they know what day it is so there won't be a surprise trip to do, or work, and it's easier to save for the occasion.

The concept is nice, but for me it's the little things each day that really show you love the person. Not just a grand gesture on a specific holiday.

It's sort of the same reason I'm not fond of Christmas anymore. The pressure of presents and the fact that it feels like an obligation to get a gift rather than it coming from the heart.

That's just my two cents.

If anything, it allows us to look at our beliefs about love. Under the pressure of having to perform our love in a certain way, this pressure feels like something imposed for a lot of people. So as they question the conventions themselves, often they have time to reflect on the nature of love itself. That is very valuable.

Especially for practitioners, it gives us a chance to look at ourselves and our hardened beliefs about how things should or shouldn't be done. This cultural moment can be a chance to let go of ourselves.
