Are you acquainted with the furry fandom? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom

What the heck?

So here is an opportunity to see various wasteful ways of reacting to this, and other ways, the other way might be to see what is going on, or furthermore see if there might be value to derive from any of what this is.

The "otherkin" are people rightfully dissatisfied by normal human status or interactions, they are trying to say something, and have seen in the nobility of animals something of a quality that they wish to apply to themselves, a very ancient human tradition.

Animal comparisons and meditations have also long been a part of Buddhist meditations. To simply scoff and snort at things might be to derive only minimal value from them, but to consider things and what might be extracted from this may be of greater benefit.

My "what the heck?" wasn't about what is on the video so much as what might be going on in this thread. The Dharma has come to these children and teens in the form of an interest in animals and coming apart from the norms of society in order to work towards becoming something else, the whole operation is very Buddhist, and may be a means for any Dharma Expounder to introduce concepts which may be of benefit to such people, as well as extracting ideas which may remind us of good things as well.

Haha, they are just children with vivid imaginations. They might be weird, but who isn't? I can't imagine anyone here began their spiritual journey fully matured, and free of weirdness.

Life is weird, I embrace the weird. It's literally roleplaying, lot's of people do it. Some take it a bit further than others.. though.

Woof :alien:

Thus shall ye think of all this fleeting world:
A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream;
A flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream.

This.

Of course we're all sucked in by illusion, deluded, confused.

In a world gone mad and beset by seemingly insurmountable obstacles, though, I find a good laugh absolutely necessary every once in a while, it's very therapeutic. Not laughing at the people, laughing at the idea. What's the old joke about the three greatest joys in life? - A good laugh, a good sneeze, and quitting your job.

This is the lounge, after all. My guess is not many come here expecting serious dharma discussion.

Yep I know of bronies and furries, but this particular fad is taking it one step further. Anyway all three of these ideas are quite hillarious. Not to mention "fictionkin". Well we live in a crazy world with crazy ideas

San Antonio
Working class town with a lot of military
West side (where they're from) especially so.
Town's told repeatedly we're not as cool/unique/weird as austin.
Apparently werewolves are the outcome of that perfect storm of suck.

Seems like some sort of metaphor for the American soul. Or a bunch crazy kids. Hey, I get it, I mean I wore a cape for a while in high school. Don't even ask about my "honey boy" phase.

Interesting, I've heard of otherkin, but never seen them talking about themselves.
They look like a lot of teens involved in alternative scenes.
Many of my friends were into Wicca, occultism or the role-playing game "Vampire: The masquerade." Some either did, or appeared to, consider themselves actual vampires, or super-powerful wizards (in fantasy fiction genre). They were good folks...
...well most of them...
...but either way wasn't predicated on their identity level.

It does look weird to me, but it's funny to be on this board and talking about how weird people are.
If many of the common beliefs amongst Mahayana Buddhists were presented to common western mono-culture there would be greatly ridiculed. The only reason Buddhism is so respected in the west is that most associate with secular meditation and Batchelor style Buddhism-without-beliefs.

Also, what do you think YOU are? A human?
Lama Surya Das commenting on editing a book on Buddhist fiction. As he said, "what else is there!?" :D
