Dharma Quotes Thread

Post by KonchokZoepa »

needless to explain, I hope this will become and stay as an active thread were members of this forum paste Dharma quotes for people and especially for those who do not have time to pick up a book or study Dharma otherwise. They can come check this thread and find Dharma wisdom in small quote and go directly to the essence of Dharma wisdom.

I will start...

Suffering is of the nature of Bliss

The Buddha taught many times in the Mahayana sutras that the five aggregates, and the suffering that goes along with them, are of the nature of original and perfect purity. There is not the tiniest bit of impurity anywhere within them that needs to be abandoned.

Therefore, Mahayana practitioners do not want to be rid of their samsaric existence, but rather they aspire to take birth in samsara in as many bodies, in as many lifetimes as possible to be of benefit to sentient beings.

In Vajrayana practice, one cultivates the understanding that the five aggregates are of the nature of the five buddha families and that suffering is of the nature of bliss. Since that is the case, why would one ever want to abandon them? They are of the very essence of enlightenment.

-Khenpo Tsultrim Rinpoche

may we have the merit to make this thread useful and beneficial place to come to learn and advance our wisdom and compassion swiftly and easily.
If the thought of demons
Never rises in your mind,
You need not fear the demon hosts around you.
It is most important to tame your mind within....

In so far as the Ultimate, or the true nature of being is concerned,
there are neither buddhas or demons.
He who frees himself from fear and hope, evil and virtue,
will realize the insubstantial and groundless nature of confusion.
Samsara will then appear as the mahamudra itself….

What an excellent idea KonchogZoepa! :anjali:

Dhammapada 183: "Not to do evil, to cultivate merit [to do good], to purify one's mind - this is the Teaching of the Buddhas."
On one occasion, Thera Ananda asked the Buddha whether the Fundamental Instructions to bhikkhus given by the preceding Buddhas were the same as those of the Buddha himself. To him the Buddha replied that the instructions given by all the Buddhas are as given in the following verses:

Then the Buddha spoke in verse as follows:

Verse 183: Not to do evil, to cultivate merit, to purify one's mind - this is the Teaching of the Buddhas.

“Where do atomic bombs come from?”
Zen Master Seung Sahn said, “That’s simple. Atomic bombs come from the mind that likes this and doesn’t like that.”

"Even if you practice only for an hour a day with faith and inspiration, good qualities will steadily increase. Regular practice makes it easy to transform your mind. From seeing only relative truth, you will eventually reach a profound certainty in the meaning of absolute truth."
Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

Just quoted these on another thread, so I figured I'd post them here...
Twin Verses (1 & 2) of the Dhammapada wrote:Mind precedes all knowables,
mind's their chief, mind-made are they.
If with a corrupted mind
one should either speak or act
dukkha follows caused by that,
as does the wheel the ox's hoof.

Mind precedes all knowables,
mind's their chief, mind-made are they.
If with a clear, and confident mind
one should speak and act
as one's shadow ne'er departing.

With a loving mind, cherish more than a child
The hostile gods and demons of apparent existence,
And tenderly surround yourself with them.
Nourish them always with warm flesh and blood.
With the hook of love and compassion,
Befriend them and never dismiss them.
If, with pure noble thought and enlightened resolve,
You connect them to the sacred Dharma
And they are freed and established in happiness,
Then you, child, whoever you are,
Will be my inseparable friend.

Train, untrained, in a thought-free state.
Let training be in artlessness.
There is no reason here to train.
There is no meditator either.
The vital point of truly training
is to realize this total absence.

Je TsongKhapa Lobsang Drakpa (1357-1419)

“When people fight with others — something that yields only sins and suffering both in this and in other lives — they endure all manner of suffering for however long it takes, even at the cost of their lives. Then they show off their wounds, etc., and boast, “I received this one at that time.” This being the case, it is even more appropriate for us to endure the hardships undergone while persevering joyously in destroying the afflictions…. The one who struggles against the enemy of the afflictions and defeats them should be called a true hero, whereas the one who fights against ordinary enemies kills only a corpse, since these enemies will die naturally anyway even if they are not slain.”

1025. Who nothing has heard and nothing understood,
He ages only oxen-like:
His stomach only grows and grows,
But his insight deepens not.

1026. Who has much heard and learned,
But does despise him who is poor in learning,
Is like one blind who holds a lamp.
So must I think of such a one.

1027. Thou follow him who has heard much,
Then what is heard shall not decline.
This is the tap-root of the holy life;
Hence a Dhamma-guardian thou should'st be!

"If he recites many teachings, but — heedless man — doesn't do what they say, like a cowherd counting the cattle of others, he has no share in the contemplative life. If he recites next to nothing but follows the Dharma in line with the Dharma; abandoning passion, aversion, delusion; alert, his mind well-released, not clinging either here or hereafter: he has his share in the contemplative life." thanks david and karma jinpa for keeping this thread alive :) lets try to keep it alive so we can have a great Dharma quote everyday on the first page :jedi:

The practice of religion, spirituality or dharma has to be a method that completely destroys all suffering, a method that brings about the complete cessation of suffering, and not just temporarily. That depends upon completely eradicating the root of all the billions of sufferings that exist — ignorance and all the other delusions that spring from the root of ignorance. True peace is received whenever we completely eradicate this root of suffering. In other words, cessation of ignorance, attachment and anger is real freedom, true peace — the peace that never changes; the peace that once received can never change, is everlasting.

The Samādhirāja Sūtra states:

Though I have taught the very excellent dharma,
if you do not correctly practice after hearing it,
it is like a patient holding a bag of medicine,
it will not cure one’s illness.

Had I not known sorrow and remorse,
How could I have entered the path to release?
Had I not placed my trust in a teacher,
How could I have attained the ultimate power?

Every civilization depends upon the quality of the individuals it produces. If you over-organize humans, over-legalize them, suppress their urge to greatness - they cannot work and their civilization collapses."
