Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism

Post by _johnarundel_ »

Nichiren Daishonin teaches in “On Repaying Debts of Gratitude” (“Ho'on-sho”),
Since Nichiren’s compassion is vast, Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo will prevail for ten thousand years and beyond into the future. It possesses the beneficial power to open the blind eyes of all the people in Japan, and it blocks the path to the hell of incessant suffering. Its benefits surpass those of the teachings of Dengyo and Tiantai, and are far superior to those of Nagarjuna and Mahakashyapa.

(Gosho, p. 1036)
"Nichiren's compassion is vast" indicates the virtue of parent; "to open the blind eyes of all the people" indicates the virtue of teacher; "blocks the path to the hell of incessant suffering" indicates the virtue of sovereign. Nichiren Daishonin is the True Buddha, endowed with the three virtues of sovereign (shu 主), teacher (shi 師), and parent (shin 親), whose great pure law will illuminate the infinite darkness of the fifth five-hundred-year period of Mappo.

The Daishonin revealed his inner enlightenment (naisho) of Myoho-Renge-Kyo, in the form of the object of worship of the essential teaching, the Dai-Gohonzon. When us common mortals, filled with greed, anger, and stupidity, chant Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo to the Gohonzon, we can fuse with the life of the Original Buddha, and manifest the great benefit of attaining enlightenment in our present form (sokushin jobutsu 即身成仏). The Daishonin thus states:
Enlightenment is the fusion of wisdom and reality.

"The five characters of Myoho-Renge-Kyo are the core of the Lotus Sutra and the origin of all Buddhas throughout the entire world. Upon seeing the signs that these five characters now must be propagated, I, Nichiren, have set the precedent, today, at the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law."

In the last picture there is an altar but it leaves one up to their imagination as to what they are doing or what or who they are praying to...

There are very little instructions left by Nichiren as to how , and why to practice to or with Gohonzon.

almost like it was at first just a talisman he gave to people to hang up in their homes.

The Gohonzon is the embodiment of the Original Buddha's enlightened life. This is the meaning of "I Nichiren have inscribed my life in sumi." The object of worship can be viewed in terms of both the Buddha (nin-honzon) and the Dharma (ho-honzon). Both the Buddha and the Dharma are a one -- a single inseparable entity. This is the meaning of "the soul of Nichiren is nothing other than Nam-Myo-Ho-Ren-Ge-Kyo." (Gosho, p. 685)

The purpose of chanting Daimoku is to achieve kyochi myogo (境智冥合) -- "the fusion of reality and wisdom." This fusion is attaining enlightenment in our present form. We, common mortals, possess the power of "faith and practice." The Gohonzon inherently possesses the power of the Buddha and the Dharma (Law). When our powers of faith and practice "fuse" with the powers of the Buddha and the Dharma, we can manifest the same enlightenment as the Original Buddha -- without discarding our form as a common mortal.

Nichiren Daishonin teaches:
Though [the daimoku of] this mandala is written in but five or seven characters, it is the teacher of all Buddhas throughout the three existences and the seal that guarantees the enlightenment of all women. . .It is the teacher who leads all people to enlightenment. This mandala has never yet been revealed or propagated anywhere in the world in the more than 2,220 years since the Buddha’s passing.

(Gosho zenshu, p. 1305)
Furthermore, the Daishonin declares:
Thus, when the reality is boundless and deep, the wisdom, like water, will flow forth ceaselessly. When one achieves the fusion of reality and wisdom, he will attain enlightenment in his present form.

(Gosho, p. 1038)
