First Pilgrimage to Taisekiji

Post by _johnarundel_ »

New Hokkeko believers briefly describe their first tozan experience. Tozan is where Nichiren Shoshu believers go to the Head Temple Taisekiji, and can directly chant to the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching. Nichiren Shoshu members can thus fuse with the life of the True Buddha and expiate their karmic offences from the remotest past. The Dai-Gohonzon is the embodiment of the True Buddha's enlightened life, the fundamental core of the Three Great Secret Laws, and the Entity of the Law for the age of the Latter Day of the Law.

Nichiren Daishonin states in the Gosho, "The Person and the Law" ("Nanjo dono-gohenji"),
Those who visit this place can instantly expiate the offenses they have accumulated since the infinite past and transform their evils deriving from the three types of action into the three virtues.

(Gosho, p. 1569)

The spirit of the True Buddha Nichiren Daishonin dwells in the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching, enshrined in the Hoando at the Head Temple Taisekiji. When a common mortal chants Daimoku to the Gohonzon, with deep faith, he can attain enlightenment in his present form.
"The five characters of Myoho-Renge-Kyo are the core of the Lotus Sutra and the origin of all Buddhas throughout the entire world. Upon seeing the signs that these five characters now must be propagated, I, Nichiren, have set the precedent, today, at the beginning of the Latter Day of the Law."

Nichiren Daishonin states in “Document Entrusting the Law that Nichiren Propagated throughout His Life” (“Nichiren ichigo guho fuzokusho”),
When the sovereign accepts this Law, erect the High Sanctuary of the Temple of the Essential Teaching at the foot of Mt. Fuji. You must simply wait for this time. This is the True Law of Precepts. Above all else, my disciples should obey this document.

The ninth month of the fifth year of Ko'an (1282)
Nichiren (Signature Mark)
The Order of the Heritage of the Law: from Nichiren to Nikko

(Gosho, p. 1675)
Nichiren Daishonin established the actual precept for the Latter Day of the Law — to embrace and practice the Mystic Law of actual ichinen sanzen from kuon-ganjo that he himself revealed. (Buddhist Terminology: The High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching)

The Mystic Law of actual ichinen sanzen is embodied in the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching. The Gohonzon is the life of the Original True Buddha of kuon-ganjo in terms of both the person and the law.

Common mortals in the evil age of the Latter Day of the Law, can manifest their innate Buddha-nature by chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo to the Gohonzon of the Three Great Secret Laws, fusing with the life of the Original Buddha. This is the attainment of Buddhahood in one's present form -- sokushin jobutsu.

At the time of Kosen-rufu — when the worldwide propagation of Buddhism of the True Cause (Honinmyo) is achieved, the True High Sanctuary will be established at the foot of Mt. Fuji, for the sake of all people throughout Jambudvipa. The Dai-Gohonzon, inscribed in the second year of Ko'an (1279), is one and only object of worship to be enshrined in the Honmon no Kaidan - The High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching.

Just to clarify to avoid confusion,

The main hall (Hondo) of the Head Temple is not the Hoando, it is just a general storage house for the Dai Gohonzon mandala, and is a temporary building.

The designated main hall of the Head Temple is the Mieido building, and this is also a temporary structure until the time that the Honmon building is to be erected as a permanent Kaidan structure in Mount Fuji.

In the past centuries, another smaller building called Tiendo / Tendo served as the main hall, this building honored the Shoten Zenjin., same purpose of the the current Mieido now.

Thank you for clarifying! Yes, just as Nichiren Daishonin willed in the Sandaihihō-shō and the Minobu sojo, the True High Sanctuary (ji no kaidan) will only be established when Kosen-rufu is achieved.

Only the Sovereign, Emperor of Japan (or Empress if primogenture is no longer followed) can declare Kosen-Rufu for Nichiren Shoshu and only he can declare to erecting the Honmon Kaidan as the National Platform for the Dai Gohonzon in Mount Fuji.

Not even the High Priests have this accorded privilege, except Nichimoku Shonin whom we are all waiting for but we are asked to help others gain this practice through the power of faith and wisdom and pray for the constant Rebirth of Hokkeko members in the human form.

We must always listen to the guidance of the High Priest and the Koto of our temples, as they have been granted the sacred charge for bringing Kosen-Rufu as cautiously and wisely as possible and enhance the practice of Jigyo Keta in our personal lives as faithful Nichiren Shoshu members. Anyone who slanders the High Priest Nichinyo Shonin and the Dai Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary are culpable to their own actions.

Regarding the significance of the Dai-Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching, 26th High Priest Nichikan Shonin states:
The Gohonzon of the High Sanctuary of the Essential Teaching, inscribed in the second year of Kō’an (1279), is the supreme entity of the Law of Nichiren Daishonin’s entire life, and is the ultimate and conclusive purpose of his advent. It is the core of the Three Great Secret Laws.

The Spirit of Tozan

During the time of the Daishonin, there was a woman follower named Nichimyo Shonin. Upon hearing about the Sado exile, she departed from Kamakura with her infant daughter, Otogozen, to visit Nichiren Daishonin on the Island of Sado. In those days, rebels, bandits and pirates roamed freely, and it is no mistake to say that one made this journey at the risk of one’s life. It was a journey out in the open, exposed to the wind and rain, and Nichimyo Shonin made this journey as a woman alone with her child. Later, when Nichiren Daishonin moved to Mt. Minobu, Nichimyo Shonin again made a pilgrimage to Mt. Minobu, thereby showing her true faith. This strong, persevering faith is what made the pilgrimage to Sado and Mt. Minobu possible. The Daishonin praised Nichimyo Shonin’s faith and her determination to follow the Daishonin on her own, despite the danger to herself and her daughter. That is why the Daishonin gave the Buddhist title of ‘saint’ to this woman.
