Faith, practice, and study. Shin gyo gaku

Post by Shotenzenjin »

The three basic elements in the Daishonins Buddhism are.

1 having sencere faith in the Gohonzon.

2 daily practice of Gongyo and Daimoku while carrying out shakubuku

3 studying the teachings of True Buddhism.

Nichiren Daishonin states in the Gosho " the true entity of all phenomena"

" Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself. You must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others in the best of your abilities. Even if only a single sentence or phrase . "

Now now, let's be ecumenical, no? I am not a Nichren Buddhist but I spent a few years studying various historical and sectarian Nichren topics as an "outsider." I have great respect for it as a nuanced tradition, even if it has little use for my chosen Way. The interactions in medieval times with Tendai-shu were fascinating. I highly recommend -- to anyone interested in Mahayana -- the book "Original Enlightenment and the Transformation of Japanese Buddhism" by Princeton's Nichren Scholar Jacqueline Stone.

In the Nichiren section, presumably Nichiren. That's how we attempt to adhere to it on the site as well. A given schools triumphalism is ok on their own forum.

True Buddhism is the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin and Nichiren shoshu. Nichiren is the true Buddha of the age of mappo. All other forms of Buddhism are provisional

Provisional means the Buddhism of the harvest which is shakhumunis Buddhism. Which is no longer effective in the age of Dharma decline which is mappo.
