Food Coma, anyone?

Post by Kim O'Hara »

I know we're Buddhists here but many of us can't escape Christmas over-indulgence. Here's what's going on ...
'Food coma' after a big Christmas lunch is just your body's way of processing a large meal

The wave of tiredness that makes your eyelids droop and brain fade, right when you're meant to be entertaining friends and family.

It's the postprandial dip, and if it's an extreme one you might call it a "food coma".

If it happens after lunch at work, an afternoon coffee or stroll around the block should be enough to get you back up and running.

But if you've had an abnormally large meal — such as a festive season feast — it may feel like you have no choice but to let the food coma take hold.

So, what do we really know about this holiday hazard, and is there anything you can do if you find yourself heading towards post-food torpor? ....

In anxiety about the coming eating-celebration I did a fasting the day before Christmas (the 23rd in Germany). This was a good idea for me. Only one apple for lunch and I felt free. Yesterday was and today still will be food...
Tomorrow I'll eat one meal only, I think.

Yep, classic case of food coma here. I've absolutely overindulged in potato dumplings tonight, now I'm lying on the sofa, unable to move, watching the Lord of the Rings special extended edition for the zilionth time  And that's absolutely OK. We don't get fat on Christmas, we become fat and unhealthy the other 363 days of the year.

Btw, Ayu, the Advent time is traditionally a fasting period, in some traditions even including the 24th, what you did was very traditional

Doing the same...fasting has really changed my life.

being silent, moving, being still.

We all had a pretty modest Christmas lunch - a couple of chickens, and some salads. I tried to cook a whole large fish but it was a disaster (hint: don't experiment with cooking on Christmas day.) But there seemed to be enough for everyone. Definitely no food coma.

I have a sure-fire preventative:

Invite grandkids who arrive with a vomiting and diarrhea virus.
As a backup, ensure they and their parents also have foul colds and cough all over the food and in your face.
Seems to work brilliantly!

True.
 In about 7 of 10 Christmas times we were sick. Traditionally before Christmas, I buy some diet food for cold and diarrhea as preservation.
