Three year retreat schedule

Post by Kris »

I came across this schedule and was curious is this typically how the initial 3 year retreat is done in Kagyu (or any other tradition)?

This is a pretty typical Kamtsang schedule.

Here's the Shangpa version....

The one you posted has some "Foundation Practice" and then additional stuff--after the Pakshi Ladrup. I don't know what that is. Where did you get the schedule, Sennin? Is that from a Palpung/Situ Rinpoche site?

Saw it on my Facebook. I'll pm you the link.
I looked at the other versions and it's very interesting to see what practices may be done during retreat.

Bokar Rinpoche’s monastery has some good general info about daily schedule and annual special practices, as well, from a Kagyu POV. Kalacakra was a specialty of his; it’s not often included at other centers.

Any idea why there is so much emphasis on chod and long life practice towards the end?
Also Gyalwa Gyamtso gets nearly the same amount of emphasis as the main deities.

Most three year retreats have long life practice at the end--one reason is that the Phowa practices, as well as others, can cause shortening of life. Then, of course, once you've been given the full instructions for practice, you'll want as much time as possible to practice!

The Chod practice is Tsokle Rinchen Trengwa, usually, which is is intensive drupcho all day long.....Cho is said to be the best sort of offering, as it is a nonconceptual mandala offering, in some sense.

Gyalwa Gyamtso is a main deity, a main yidam, for Karma Kagyupas....it is said to be Karmapa's main yidam, and it was the main practice of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye for many years, and also for Chagme Rinpoche, who wrote a large number of commentaries and instructions related to the practice. Phagmo And Demchok are really related to Six Yogas, but GyalGyam has a focus on the four activities, so it's an appropriate yidam after one is exposed to the methods of accomplishment from Phagmo, ChoDruk, and Demchok.
