Prayers for my Cousin
OK...so I'm not usually one to post prayer requests, but I think in this case, my family needs it. A few days ago, I had a death in the family. The husband of my second cousin once removed died. He had been suffering in terrible pain for some time, and the doctors were unable to prescribe him painki...

Re: Redfaery's picture of stupa in Tokyo
I'm assuming this syllable would be a seed mantra, actually. Most Japanese Buddhist figures have them. I haven't been able to track down which Buddha/Boddhisattva/Deva it's for though.Fortyeightvows wrote:Thank you that looks correct. Any thought on why that syllable is there?

Re: Handling Kensho or whatever that was?
The Onmark site has a nice page tracing her evolving iconography in Japan [Redfaery, you may enjoy this]: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/benzaiten.shtml ~ Meido That's one of my favorite websites! I found it when I was in Japan, and it really helped me figure out what I was looking at in the...

Re: Handling Kensho or whatever that was?
You're welcome. Just to clarify, I wrote "No need to worry if what you experienced was kensho"...meaning, "There's no need to worry about whether or not it was kensho", not "If you had kensho, there's no reason to worry". Hope you feel better. ~ Meido Thank you. That m...

Re: Handling Kensho or whatever that was?
No need to worry if what you experienced was kensho. If we practice, various meritorious phenomenon arise. Of course kensho is important in Zen as the gate of practice, but by itself is generally not sufficient. So the main thing is to work closely with a legitimate teacher in whatever tradition yo...

I wasn't aware that I was clinging? It was actually a frightening experience, and I simply haven't felt like quite the same person. Like I've been broken into pieces and then reassembled.supermaxv wrote:Quit clinging to the experience?

Handling Kensho or whatever that was?
So, about a week ago, I had a kensho, or something like it. I can only describe it as a profound moment of awareness and suddenly "getting" a concept that I'd never really been able to grasp before. Sarasvati simply transmitted understanding to me. I knew what Prajnaparamita was. I totally...

The only additional information on this stupa I have is that it is near a statue of Jizo, so is probably under his auspices.
I apologize for my lack of helpfulness, but when I was there, I was focused on finding Benzaiten-sama.

Re: Finding time for practice
Well...what time do you get up? Could you try getting up maybe a little earlier and getting practice in the morning? Why is your schedule tight? Maybe you should reevaluate some of your activities and decide which ones you want to keep. Of course, if you're already getting up at 3am, and you've got ...

I'm happy to say that I haven't killed a bug in a while. Not even a fruit fly. One landed on my arm and I was about to go SMASH but then went...HOLD ON and just brushed it off.

Re: Honji Suijaku and Shinbutsu Shūdo
Wouldn't you know it? NCSU doesn't have the book, and it's selling on Amazon for $120 (I signed up with a student account, so I get a discount on it). It's times like these that I remember that I have the best parents in the world, because they will get me this as a gift if I ask. Especially since i...

Honji Suijaku and Shinbutsu Shūdo
Can someone point me to references on the doctrine of Honji Suijaku as it was delineated in Japanese Buddhism, especially in regards to the practice of Shinbutsu Shūdo? I know the outlines, but I want to have a firmer grasp of it. Any information would be appreciated.

Re: Faith like a mustard seed.
Royall Tyler's Japanese Tales has a lot of wonderful Buddhist stories in it from the Classical and Early Medieval periods. Mostly Pure-land inspired. He tells this one much better than I did. This one is my favorite, though. So I had to share it.

Faith like a mustard seed.
Title idea taken from a Buddhist friend. Story taken from Royall Tyler's translation of a tale from the late twelfth century collection of anecdotes, Konjaku Monogatari . Mukashi Mukashi... There was once a man named Gendayu. He was very wicked indeed, a fearless bandit. Not a day went by without hi...

Educating others...trying not to despair
I hope this is the right place. Ever since I've decided to commit to Buddhism, I've taken on the correction of faulty assumptions about Buddhism and challenging slanders against religion and people of faith as....something of a mission. I've already had to correct a remark that "Buddha was deif...

I don't remember these but it would be best, if possible, to capture them and release them outside. The first refuge vow is the vow to stop killing. This includes bugs too. Then if you protect their lives and release them you have committed an act of great merit and you then can dedicate that to th...

Re: A really....kind of stupid question. Several, Actually.
The five precepts. Yes. That makes sense. But not the other, monastic precepts? I mean, I try to follow the precepts as best I can, as sort of a guide to rightful conduct. Like...I don't even squash bugs unless they act aggressive. (and we have these things called camel crickets here in NC that are....
