Given that the subject is a sect clearly connected to Nichiren Shoshu and that the topic veered towards SGI it seems to me that the general Nichiren section would be the most appropriate.Shotenzenjin wrote: ↑Fri Jul 23, 2021 6:42 pm Wouldn't this sgi talk be better suited for the sgi forum?

Re: how changes affect us in Nichiren Shonin's denominations
Once namu is placed it becomes something other than title. Firstly, don't forget that Namu is really just a corruption of Namas. And 'chinese' variants use other 'corrupted' pronunciations. (I don't use corrupted in a negative or pejorative sense here. And by chinese I mean the dozens of variations...

Re: how changes affect us in Nichiren Shonin's denominations
the Title is chant Daimoku properly...never mentions Namu...it seems he drops one of ideograms in his lecture...albeit it is translation but why not use the 2 ideograms as Nichiren did. Ideograms are just a form of writing. Their pronunciation is fixed neither in time nor place. And nowhere outside...

Re: how changes affect us in Nichiren Shonin's denominations
I can assure you that the characters for Nam Mu do not have huge meaning. They were chosen for the approximation of their sound to the sanskrit Namas. They evidently do have some meaning but I have never yet heard any explanation of why those two in particular were chosen. Suffice to say that many c...

 How do they chant. Do they use Namu or Nam  From their Sutra Recitation book , they appear to use 'Namu'. Which makes sense since they originate from Nichiren Shu. You should probably bear in mind that Nichiren Shu is an amalgam of most but not all the Nichiren lineages. Perhaps more l...

I would be careful to check the sources that are listed as some of them are not listed correctly. Also it seems that it is written with a rather anti shoshu tilt. Gassho hi , you are new here so hi... what anti shoshu tilt..i could not see any. and wiki is a bit bent at times I don't see an anti-sh...

Re: NMHRK is a mantra or not
The Sanskrit word, “mantra” actually has the same etymological root as the words “mental” and “mind”. The meaning of “mantra” is that which focuses the mind. If you chant NMHRK to focus the mind, then it is a mantra. In fact, you could simply chant the letters, “N-M-H-R-K” and if doing that helped ...

Re: Soka Gakkai yesterday and today
I must admit that I found it strange that the thesis by Levi McLaughlin stopped before the schism, even though it appears to have been published about 10 years later. That doesn't undermine the thesis but as you say, but we are talking about history now. The past, as they say, really is another coun...

Re: Is world domination SGI’s goal?
I mean it is called the holy Roman empire. Slightly off-topic but the Holy Roman Empire was a long time after the fall of the roman empire. A quick look at Wikipedia indicates that it didn't have much to do with Rome, either. It was basically a germanic empire. Rather ironic, really, considering th...

My take on it is that such ideas were open to being misunderstood and misinterpreted - both by his followers and his enemies. Back then communication and flow of information was a lot more restricted. Sharing such ideas without fully understanding risked doing more harm than good. And from the writi...

Re: Where to purchase Butsugu accessories.
A lot of the NS stuff that the soka gakkai used to sell back in the day was either cheap plastic or gaudy brass and was branded in its own way. I must admit I never really cared much for it. I've always used hand made butsugu where possible/practical. Recently, after my water cup developed a crack I...

He calls that everyone. Don't worry. :D It's his way of saying it does not have to be as it seems, but it might. Even his own students. I did wonder if something like that might be the case. Especially as I myself don't like the term 'buddhist' at all. It just puts people into a little box. Unfortu...

Re: Any independent Nichiren Buddhists here?
Not a nichiren buddhist, but my guess would be lotus sutra and nichiren's own writing? There is a really nice translation of lotus sutra at 84000 project. I didn't get as far as reading the translation but this caught my eye in the introduction by Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche: The Japanese ch...

Re: What will happen when Daisaku Ikeda dies?
I get the gist of what Minobu is saying here and I'm largely in agreement. I know it was always argued that one of Ikeda's roles was to schmooze the rich and powerful but it just came across as a bit needy to me. And buying up chateaux (don't forget Taplow Court in the UK) amongst other major proper...

Re: Why do we have to do continuous daimoku?
Hmm - I looked but couldn't find it. If anything, Niwano did not believe in the merits of chanting too much daimoku because the mind will start to wander. He seems to have been a 'little but often' kind of guy.

I pretty sure I've read that quote in an article by Niwano - but i'm not sure of it's ultimate provenance.
