Re: Is being part of Nichiren sect a requirement to be a Nichiren Buddhist?
What exactly is your objection? Admittedly, I’ve never understood the reticence some people have toward making a commitment. For me, I became a Nichiren Shu Buddhist because I was done being a “dabbler.” I’m not the world’s greatest practitioner, but I feel connected to a lineage and to teachers who...

I’m not sure if it’s online anymore. I think just about the only way to get it is to order it. NBIC has a cheap one for $5, I think.

Re: Nichiren Shu Gongyo prayer
I’m not sure if Rev. Ryuei wrote it, but he might have. The North American temples, at least, have been using it for a long time. The shodaigyo prayer is a little different, and there are some other variations. Sometimes I’ll shorten it at home.

Re: How do the precepts fit into Nichiren Shu?
The same way they fit into other Nichiren schools. Nichiren taught that as your practice deepens, you will follow the precepts naturally. We vow to keep the precept of upholding Namu Myoho Renge Kyo. The merit of keeping other precepts is contained within that.

Re: Can you be a member of Nichiren Shu and practice mindfulness?
It's not taught in Nichiren Shu as such, no. You can practice it if you want, but it doesn't have much to do with our tradition.

Re: if everything is upaya(means) what is daimoku ?
In Tiantai and Tendai, this teaching is interpreted to expansively embrace the immeasurable upaya. Nichiren, however, interpreted this to say, once the Essential is revealed, there is no need for the immeasurable upaya. I think this is the point where Nichiren and Tendai diverge. It's an important ...

Re: To a Buddhist is there a Hell and is there death? What are the 108 Existences
Rebirth can occur in any one of six realms: heaven, the realm of humans, the realm of animals, the realm of asuras, the realm of hungry ghosts, and hell. So hell is not permanent, it's just one of the realms of transmigration. Asuras are angry and boastful demigods; hungry ghosts are hellish beings ...

Re: The Writings of Nichiren
Today is the commemoration of the Komatsubara Persecution, which occurred on November 11, 1264. At yesterday's service, we recited the following, from the Nanjo Hyoe Shichiro-dono Gosho (WNS Vol. 3, pp 145-146): On the 11th day of the 11th month this year, on the thoroughfare of Matsubara in Tojo, A...

Re: The Writings of Nichiren
Muddy water has no mind but it still catches the moon’s reflection and naturally becomes lucid. Plants and trees catch the rain in order to blossom, but can we say they do this deliberately? The five characters of Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo are not the text of the sutra nor a mere explanation; rather they a...

Congrats.
I don't know a lot about HBS, but I believe they chant the Odaimoku exclusively (no sutra recitation) and focus their study on chapters 15-22 of the Lotus Sutra.

Re: Shushogi
I think the above is an unfair characterization, however technically accurate it might be. I think the Shushogi proves that the Soto tradition is more than the secular meditation practice it’s presented as by Brad Warner and others. It’s a religious tradition as heavy on ritual and devotion as Jodo ...
Re: Shushogi
I didn’t say “all,” and no, I’m not including Vietnamese and Chinese Zen groups. I think most people reading this know exactly what I’m talking about.
Shushogi
Is this text discussed much in American Soto Zen? I don’t remember it ever being discussed at the Soto Zen center I attended years ago. I know it’s held in high regard in Jiyu-Kennett Roshi’s lineage, but outside of that, I don’t recall hearing it discussed much. I’ve always liked it quite a bit, an...

Re: Should I stay or should I go?
I’m a former Soto Zen practitioner, now a Nichiren Buddhist. Part of the reason I switched has to do with the issues you expressed. Although I think Soto Zen does have a fairly strong devotional aspect, it is unforgivably downplayed in America.

It’s just surprising and seemingly out of the blue. And off-topic for a thread created because another thread went off topic.

Re: Do you practice with Nichiren Shu, SGI or Nichiren Shoshu?
Nichiren Shu since 2006, Soto Zen before that. I was always interested in Nichiren Buddhism, but not interested in SGI. As for why Nichiren Shu, I could give a few reasons. My interest in Buddhism has always been primarily in East Asian Mahayana and Nichiren Shu feels more closely connected to that....

Re: Are there precepts in Nichiren Shu?
I’m a Nichiren Shu practitioner. Others have answered more in-depth with what are basically the Nichiren Shu understanding of the precepts. They’re there inasmuch as they are in Nichiren Buddhism, generally. But they’re not focused on for the reasons others have stated. One’s behavior naturally conf...

Re: Etsy Gohonzon store: what do y’all think?
Object to what? Just the fact that he sells them? Is he just selling them to anyone who wants one? I'm not sure I care for that, if that's the case, but there isn't much anyone can do about it. Not all of what is on his site would be suitable honzons for a Nichiren practitioner, but that's neither h...
